Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito: The Rematch

It was Cotto that said that he could not get any shots to Margarito's body. So let's give props to Margarito's defense, which many of you said Margarito lacked.

To counter your second statement, the only reason Cotto was not knocked out was precisely that, his corner prevented that from happening. There was about 45-50 seconds left in the 11th round. Had they not thrown the towel in Kenny Bayless would have stopped it.(we hope he would've). In my opinion though a stoppage whether by the ref or corner is still a KO.

I am and was for Margarito all the way. Cotto to me is still and will continue to be a great fighter. It is a shame though that some people still do not want to admit that he was beaten and beaten badly. They make excuses for his loss not wanting to really admit that it he was beaten but rather lost the fight due to lack of adjustment, physical preparation or whatever. Yes, he was winning the 1st 6 rounds, yes he was schooling Maragarito. But none of that matters at the end. Had the fight gone 12 rounds there is a very good chance Maragarito would have gotten the decision. VERY GOOD CHANCE.

Right....please know that im in no way degrading Margaritios performance in any way....the fact that he stood there and took those shots, gave that pressure, and continued to punch are all great aspects.

Shalafi shut up, even in the ninth when Cotto was fatigued he was still hitting Margarito, it doesn't matter if the punches had pop or not papi, is what the judges see

It was a great fight and only added to what boxing is still lacking, more great fights like this. I don't give a crap about money fights ala DLH vs Pac. I have to admit I went to the DLH vs Mayweather fight and walked away dissapointed. Not because DLH lost (yes, I feel gayish admitting I was going for him) but because it was a "money fight". I made a promise to my wife that we would not be going to any more fights with over-the-hill, washed up boxers. If they were at their height of their career maybe but no more 35 y.o. fighting another 35 y.o. They both walk away winners....fk that.

I like this post. The only part I disagree with is the props for Margarito's D. Tony was great and fought a tough fight, but it wasn't his defenses that prevented Cotto from going to the body, it was his offense. Cotto couldn't go downstairs because of the constant pressure. To do so would have opened him up to be hit even more.

Kudos to both guys though. Cotto was the more skilled, but Margarito proved that that doesn't always determine the outcome of a fight.l

If my memory serves me right Margarito connected in the 2nd round with an uppercut that caught his attention if not momentarily rocked him. I also believe that it might have been the 2nd round where Cotto's eye was knicked. So Marg was getting some shots in early in the fight just not as clean and crisp as Cotto was. IMO it was an accumulation of shots that wore down Cotto and do not agree that he was not in good condition. Cotto always comes to a fight in great condition, he had never taken shots like that before. Adjustments he would need to make would be ala Mayweather...run, hit , run and oh...dont get tagged.

Agreed. Cotto would definetly need to shore up his defense.

What are your thoughts on his nose being broken? It was Margs punches that caused it so there isn't any excuse, but do you not think that it may have contributed to him not being able to breathe properly and therefore effected his stamina? Because like you, I also believe he was in top condition.

Hard to say whether it would have made a difference. I don't necessarily buy the fact that this was a reason for his loss. Who really knows? He as also cut, can we then say "had he not been cut would he have won?" Hey his nose being broken, his mouth being busted up and bleeding, his eye being knicked/cut are all because of boxing so there is not really any argument (not that you are) about anything that happened they were are related to the punches being thrown. Great fight would like to see a rematch.
