Margarito vs. Cotto, the things I saw

First of all, I would like to mention that this is a post for objective posters, not biased nationalistic dorks that think that the outcome of a boxing match defines who they are as a person. For example, those "told you that Mexico is a better country and we rule" ignorant trolls. The same goes to any other nationality, I just happened to mention Mexico since they won this time around but I'm aware some fans from our country, Puerto Rico, have shown the same type of behaviour before.

Cotto had a good game plan early on, but I noticed some things even before the fight that showed some overconfidence, perhaps arrogance from him. Everytime somebody asked him about his training and how he would modify it to cope with Margarito, who was easily his biggest challenge to date, he would say that Margarito was just another opponent and that the training was hard as usual but no different. Prior to this fight, Cotto's biggest challenge had been Mosley and he had to dig deep to beat an inspired and still dangerous fighter, but he was able to make adjustments because physically he matches well with Shane. Margarito, although much less talented than Mosley, was bigger, stronger, and more durable, so Cotto had to be ready to move for 12 rounds and avoid the ropes as if there was barb wire. It makes me wonder if Cotto thought he was going to knock Margarito out because that was very unlikely and even less without going to the body effectively. I don't know if it was the broken nose or a lack of roadwork, but Cotto was looking tired after 6 rounds, which was very unusual in a well conditioned fighter like him.

Still, I think Cotto looked very well through the first half of the fight and had Margarito very frustrated with his brilliant counterpunching and movement. I have to say he had the gameplan but the stamina failed him and he needed it to be able to box circles around Margarito for 12 rounds, not just 6 or 7. Props to Cotto for showing a lot of heart throughout the first 10 rounds, even if the 11th has that question mark about whether or not he gave up. I have to say the judges were not doing a good job at all because I don't see how Margarito could have been ahead after 10 rounds. Cotto won, at least, 5 out of the first 6 rounds. You could also give him round 8 or 9, at least one of the two, so that would make for 6 total rounds against 4 for Margarito. That's a 96-94 Cotto. For some reason it was that score but for the other fighter. If there's ever a rematch, avoid Vegas.

Margarito deserves all the credit in the world for never quitting and overcoming a much more talented boxer although, to be fair, Margarito had all the physical advantages on his side. He never got discouraged and kept looking for Cotto and finally got to him. Margarito never got overwhelmed by the situation of being in such a high profile bout. I really don't see anyone at 147, with the exception of Paul Williams, doing well against him. The only guys who might be able to deal with him are Williams, Daniel Santos, and maybe DLH could use ring movement to get a decision, but Margarito should be the favorite. Let's hope Cotto can return and let's hope that the 147 pound class can continue to provide great matchups as it has been doing for a while now.

I believe Lennox Lewis said it best after his fight with Vitali Klitschko.

"Look at the state of his face!"

I think three times prior to round 11, Margarito had hurt Cotto and forced him to tie up.

Cotto had never hurt Margarito to the point that he had to tie up for the whole fight.
Even though Cotto's punches were frequent, they had little effect.

Kellerman also mentioned how even though Cotto has looked good early on, his face looks like he was the one getting beaten up and that the judges might feel the same way.

With that said, I think I had it even.

I think anything from 97-93 Cotto to 95-95 even were possible. To have Margarito 2 points ahead was not even though he was landing the harder punches.

How can you say, that Margarito wasn't hitting hard? Margarito hurt him in the 2nd rd with a bodyshot, then broke his nose with an uppercut, and finally cut his eye, all in the same rd. True, Cotto was landing some extremely hard clean punches, but he was also taking some hard bodyshots. An accumillation of bodyshots will take the legs out of just about any fighter. And I think that's what happened.

I know exactly which body shot you are taking about in the second round, that **** was straight up to hooked on Cotto's stomach, you could tell it hurt him cuz he staggered back and had a puzzled look afterwards.

I dont think Cotto was overconfident, he says that stuff for every fight, its damn near copyrighted along with "I fight whoever the company puts in front of me".
