Cotto proved he is not a great fighter

any elite fighter would not lose to someone as limited as margarito,

Cotto is a far superior fighter in terms of skill,

i thought he was going to win and dominate the division for as long as he wanted,

    i was wrong,

How any fighter with the skill of Cotto can lose to someone as slow and plodding as Margarito is beyond me,

margarito has terrible footwork he just plods forward with no lateral movement,

he throws very wide punches, he would be easy work for a real elite fighter like mayweather

Sometimes a guy has your number. And Margarito called it in last night.

I totally agree. If you lose to Margarito, there is no way in hell you can be considered a great fighter. Cotto deserved to be p4p based on his accomplishments to that point (boxing isn't exactly deep with talent right now, Kelly Pavlik is in the ****ing top 5), but last night he got knocked right out elite consideration. Anybody with any boxing ability whatsoever who can also take a punch beats Margarito. Cotto is not a great boxer and his chin is pretty weak too. I'm just glad all the Mayweather comparisons are over and done with. Nobody will ever claim this kid had a chance at Floyd again, so this is a good day indeed.

i agree even though i didn't think margarito was winning i didn't understand why cotto was on the ropes the entire fight and no margarito did not pressure cotto to the ropes he would lay onthe ropes and wait for margarito to come it made no sense

I agree....Margarito is a "Pitbull" but he is no way a fighter that any elite fighter with boxing skills should lose too...

Cotto was winning the first 5 rounds by Doing what boxers should do to fighters like margarito...But He could not keep it up...

He could not handle the pressure...If cotto would of fought the last 7 rounds like he did the first 5...He would effectually out class Margarito but he could not handle the pressure...! He could not beat his first real highly ranked prime young active fighter...

          Miguel Cotto Con's

Cotto has been on cloud 9 before he was even a champion,
Now that Cotto is now in the spotlight and boxing is looking towards him to replace Floyd. He has left himself no room to grow as a fighter...

No More Unproven Contenders Like Gomez,
No More Past their Prime Old Fighters Mosely in which He barely Wins..
No More fighting non active fighters like Judah
He now has to fight Prime,Active, Young , P4P, Highly ranked Fighters....
There is no more grace time.....The Time is Now....
And His First Test is Margarito....
Remember Cotto has never had to beat a Champion For his Title...He has always fought fellow contenders for vacant titles....

I have been seeing this coming though, but the commentators on HBO are just commenting on the good things they see. Instead of the little things he does wrong that champions will see and will counter, and will not miss. He still gets hit a lot, and wastes a lot of punches. Sometimes he punches from too far out and leaves gaps where he can be countered or beaten to the punch.

          • Zab Judah Show you how to counter him....
          • Shane Mosley show you how to pressure him
          • Demarcus Corely Show you how to accurately hit him...

and Margarito will Probably show how can he handle being hurt by somebody who can finish the job
And all those fighters all had defaults in their game....Either they were too old, primes their prime, not active before fighting him, or basic contenders.....

Margarito is none of the above.
Margarito is not past his prime, he is active before fighting cotto, and he is not a contender.

Margarito is a fighter, Fighters like Cotto and Williams get credit for.

Steward,Merchant and Lampley make and made Cotto out to be some phenom, because he's KO'd a bunch of lightweights, contenders, and Past their prime fighters
when they know he's starving to make the weight.

I am not saying Cotto doesn't have a chance against Prime Young P4P Fighters
but he still might be too green to face the guy that His Fans and Arum are expecting Cotto to now fight.
He still has very good skills, power, and a lot of heart, that will keep in the fights. Unfortunately, he still gets hit a lot, and wastes a lot of punches.

          ...

couldn't even beat Margarito. so how is Cotto as good as Mayweather when Cotto isn't even one of the top 2 guys in his weight class?

I was just thinking the same thing.. Someone so overtly 1 dimensional destroying someone with supposedly so much talent warrants a lot of questions. Maybe Cotto Was indeed overrated, especially considering how Paul Williams dealt with the same person. PW got beat by Quintana btw who got beat by Cotto. Cotto getting beat by Margarito only alludes to the fact that none of these Welter Weight's were on Floyd's level at all. They all lost to each other.

bull****.. its obvious some of you guys never been in the ring judging on the way you view relentless pressure and post count.. cotto is still a top boxer and i think floyd would UD margarito but it wont be easy and i have it 60-40 for MAYweather vs marg..

i am also a big floyd fan and i have tremendous respect for his skills but saying it would be easy work is just bull****..
