The range the two fights were at were at different distances. Cotto was inside more so Margs was more vulnerable but Williams stay outside a lot and threw a ton of jabs so Margs could see them better.
Margs idea with Cotto was to keep walking him down. He didn't understand to do that with Williams until the middle of the fight. You could tell, Williams soft shots weren't hurting him but were scoring with the judges. It's like Margs felt that these shots are weak so I can just pick my spots. It's a good lesson he learned, not to be outworked no matter who you are fighting.
Williams was like 17 out of 116 in the first round with over 100 jabs alone.

Williams 12th round imo, won him that fight when he fought like a champ when it mattered.

This time though, he just got his ass beat up early on. Its almost like he didnt have any defense at all. Everything Cotto threw was landing flush on Margaritos face.

Its really Ironic because Margarito looked like a much more talented fighter when he was fighting Williams, yet he lost that fight and beat Cotto.

That was because Williams was throwing ALOT of punches, Margarito was able to block some while some landed but he was too busy blocking punches so much that he wasnt able to let his hand go....Which made his defence looked better, In the cotto fight Margarito's defence looked **** because HE was throwing more punches while cotto was just looking to land when Rito lets his hands go.

Cotto is a much better puncher than Williams.

He blocked some of Williams punches. But he took a lot too. Williams really left Margarito dumb founded to be honest. Williams had the length to keep him at bay. But also had the toughness to fight inside with Margarito. And he showed he can push it to a gear further than Margarito did in the 11th. Because in the 12th he came out like a man determined. Plus he's a smarter fighter than Marg.

Margarito knew Cotto couldn't hurt him. So he disregarded it and walked right through Cotto.

Williams plain and simple outworked Margs. Williams also used his height and reach advantage to great effect.
Margs was definitely stronger on the inside and was backing Williams up in the later rounds but as has been said before Williams went inside in the 12th and got the business done.
