Funny how certain people are picking Toney to beat Haye

When Zuri Lawrence with 0 KO's stuns and cuts you, then you know you are done, not to mention the fight being competitive until the 9th round against a journeyman.I agree, Rahman is an erratic fighter.
Rahman is over the hill I think, his punches don't have the same speed and snap they used to.
Toney would definitely be a good first fight for Haye, even at this point, his experience and durability would make Haye work for the victory.Comment

Apart from the "Coalition" and Margarito fans no one is picking Margarito to win. Margarito's 6th loss will be coming up soon and people will realise he was a hyped fighter, mattafact no one would even know him if Arum didn't exist.Comment

I just like Margarito because he comes to fight. That's why I give him a good chance to beat Cotto.
Announcers like him because he usually keeps punching despite his limitations.Comment

I don't think it's out of the question for Toney to beat Haye, I think it is more likely that Toney would lose an ugly but wide decision and pretend he was robbed, but I think it's an odd notion that he would stop Haye, even if Haye is a bit chinny.Comment

Why is it so funny? David Haye has never fought at heavyweight, who knows if he's kept the power and speed that he had at cruiserweight and whether or not that will be enough to face a good heavyweight like James Toney.Comment

Toney is definitely not a top 10 heavyweight at this point, he hasn't done anything to warrant being in the top 10 even in the heavyweight division.I dont think Toney is a top 10 HW right now. In the Rahman fight, you could notice Toney was slower and was getting hit more often by the even slower Rahman, Haye is a quicker fighter and more dynamic fighter. I think a better fight for Haye at this stage would be Chris Arreola or Sultan Ibragimov for a second HW fight who are both Top 10 HW's right now and not shot. Even if Haye wins he is in a lose-lose situation and people will question his skills as Toney is not the same fighter he once was. Even Danny Williams can pose more challenge at this stage than someone who ALMOST beat Danny Batchelder and got a draw with a fighter Maskaev KTFO in his next fight.
Toney did look a little slower, he did employ more head movement in the fight though but as you said, he did get hit by the jab quite a few times by Rahman and almost got caught by some right hands. Rahman also definitely looked very slow.
Haye wants to look good in his first fight at heavyweight so Ibragimov is out, he'd present a bad stylistic matchup and he could make the fight a boring one, an Arreola fight would be a good, exciting fight. I wouldn't mind him fighting Dimitrenko either, he's ranked 4th in the WBC while Haye is ranked 5th, that fight could be pretty big in Europe.
People do know who Toney is though, so a win over Toney would look nice on his resume and while Toney is not the fighter he once was, he is as cagey as they come and is durable so it could be a good learning experience for Haye but probably wouldn't mean much.
The Rahman-Maskaev fight was pretty close heading into the 12th, Rahman was ahead on one of the judges' scorecard but yes, it doesn't change the fact that he was knocked out pretty badly to Lennox Lewis saying "It's ovaaaaaaaaa!"Last edited by Silencers; 07-26-2008, 10:05 AM.Comment

He has fought at heavyweight, he stopped Tomazs Bonin in the first round in his only fight at the weight to date.Comment

Agreed with all points. A win against Toney at this point would be taken as seriously as the people who take Holyfield's loss to Ibragimov seriously.Toney is definitely not a top 10 heavyweight at this point, he hasn't done anything to warrant being in the top 10 even in the heavyweight division.
