Jeff Lacy Survives a Thriller With Epi Mendoza at Morongo

By Cliff Rold - Regardless of who one might have thought to be the winner, there could be little doubt that all of the fans watching on television and in the arena at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California on Wednesday night saw one hell of a main event. 31-year old former Super Middleweight titlist Jeff Lacy (24-1, 17 KO) of St. Petersburg, Florida picked up his third straight victory, if just barely, in a war with 32-year old Colombian spoiler Epifanio Mendoza (28-6-1, 24 KO) but where that will lead remains to be seen. I saw it as a draw, possibly close win for Mendoza.

Taylor is going to wipe the floor with Lacy come November. Wow.

Lacy deserved the win on the cards, but he definitely got his ass kicked

I was thinking the same... Lacy just ran out of gas... if he wasn't so tired he could have K.O'd this guy i think... obviously he was winded after the 4th...

Taylor can't affort another loss. He's gonna kick Lacy's ass. Lacy is not the same fighter, also was overrated.

Lacy looks fine in the first rounds, using the jab and being controlled. Then in the stretch he looked like he just wanted to swing bolos and get the KO. He should stuck to the gameplan and would not have had much trouble in the fight..

I felt Lacy lost the fight and his tackle probably saved him from being KOd doesnt matter though...

Lacy is comparatively inexperienced, not the opposite.

The writer says that "Lacy acknowledged that the tackling was strategic". Well folks if you saw both the fight and the interview, as I did, I believe that you would not agree with this writer. I don't.

Lacy took quite a bashing, and fell forward, luckily onto Mendoza, because he would have gone down if Mendoza had stepped back quickly enough. Falling into him like that, he held on, he made Mendoza overbalance backwards, right across the whole width of the ring. Mendoza came down HARD with the back of his neck on the bottom rope, and Lacy heavy on top of him. Lacy should have got a count, as indeed he also should have in the second round when he was knocked across the ring after a Mendoza battering and only the ropes held him up.

In the interview. Lacy was denying everything, and in fact didn't even know what Teddy was talking about, when Teddy tried to put words into his mouth, to get him to agree that he played it clever and held on and pushed Mendoza down just to gain time. I think that teddy also was trying to get Lacy to admit that he was badly hurt then. After Teddy repeated it a few times, Lacy caught on, and then of course grabbed the excuse and "ran with it" in fact he kept repeating about his great ring experience until that record was worn out.

It was a great fight, but both guys took unneccessary punsihment. I thought Mendoza pulled it out. On this performance it's easy to see how Calzaghe made a fool of him and half-killed him.

I think he IS the same fighter. People like to think something of Lacy he never was because of the Calzaghe fight.
