The ring-wars between the two nations technically got under way back in October of 1978 when famed Puerto Rican Wilfred Gomez set out to defeat the once-thought-to-be unstoppable Carlos Zarate, who remains the only boxer in history to put together two streaks of 20 or more knockouts. The winner of 55 fights in a row with all but one coming by way of KO, never in a million years did anyone think - despite his greatness - that Wilfred Gomez would be able to pull off the victory.

It's as simple as math. In the lower weight classes there are 90% latinos, so obviously the two fight eachother constantly, thus the rivalry. About blacks being the better fighters, as petterson about that one.

Since I have been following boxing (60s) Mexican and Puerto Ricans boxers have dominated weights under middleweight. This has created the best fights on those divisions creating the rivary you refer too. The rivary is good for both the giant Mexico and the small Island. (30x90 miles)
Smart fans know that the rivary is healthy for their champion because there's no better motivation than a rivary.
Smart boxers know that it's not personal, it's business.
Mexico is 1000 times bigger so just the fact that Puerto Rico is in the rivary is amazing since the population is much smaller.
I like the rivary, but hate the ignorant fans that want to make it a feud or personal.
