I just read on other sites that Valuev and Ruiz will face one another for the vacant WBA belt. I do not recall when the WBA stripped Chagaev. Anyone know?
When did the WBA strip Chagaev of the belt?

You are correct. They just want to collect more sanctioning fees from a championship fight, thus the fight became an interm championship. The winner will have to face Chagaev when he is well enough to fight.I didn't think he was. Maybe it's for the interim version, and it was a typoComment

They are fighting for the regular WBA heavyweight title. However, there is a stipulation: whoever wins must fight Chagaev when he recovers.
Chagaev is no longer the WBA heavyweight champion, but he has been awarded a special title, called "Champion in Recess" - it's something like the WBC "emeritus" status.
Chagaev has until June 2009 to fight the regular titleholder or be stripped of his "Champion in Recess" status.Comment

Valuev vs. Ruiz is not for an interim title.
It's for the WBA title. Chagaev was stripped but given a "Champion in Recess" title.Comment
