and the best pound for pound fighter of all time, need i even say this, was sugar ray robinson

yes they are all black get over it, black people have contributed more to boxing than whites ( and im white btw) its not such a huge thing and i dont know why we even bother making threads saying best white fighter best black fighter etc.....they are all fighters, and once you are in the ring, colour doesnt matter, you should be more concerned about getting knocked out.

I can't believe how far this has degenerated.

KT44: Ray Robinson was the best P4P and the best WW but not the best MW. Harry Greb probably was better than him, as well as Monzon and Hagler. I would say the highest white guys on an overall P4P ranking would be Willie Pep and Benny Leonard. They are both in the top five for most.

You know, I find it funny that a lot of guys here are saying that the black boxer's 'style' is better and white guys are crude. Who is the original and still the best pure scientist of the 'sweet science'? It's Pep. Most great black guys that you refer to as 'stylish', like Ray Leonard and Whitaker took a lot from him. Benny Leonard (quite a lot of people consider him the best P4P ever) was also a true master of the science of boxing along with, arguably, the greatest ever defensive genius Nicolino Locche.

There are a million ways you could spin the ridiculous and absurd sides of this argument, suffice to say, that white, black, hispanic, asian etc have all produced incredible athletes and there really is no one superior race of athletes.

You could make absurd generalisations such as blacks are better sprinters while whites are better at strength, asians are better at agile sports while hispanics are better at football, but, really none of it is true. It is all dependent on the culture one grows up in and with. There are cultures and sub-cultures surrounding sports and who plays them and who should play them.

If you grow up in a soccer mad area/country, you are going to be good at playing soccer no matter what color you are. Pele and Maradona are opposite yet both are considered the best because they grew up with it.

Joe Louis and Ali are both considered the best heavyweights yet both are vastly different fighters, with Louis a 'slugger' and Ali the prototypical dancing boxer. What about Pep and Gatti? Again, both vastly different.

Anyone that hangs onto their "Blacks are better athletes" or "White are superior" simply don't get it and both are showing prejudice. When you say "I'm not being prejudiced but blacks are simply better athletes", you're simply contradicting yourself. There is nothing to suggest anything of that sort, as historically all races have had vast success in sports, albeit, of different types.

It all comes down to the climate and culture of the times and how that effects the people and how it effects who is successful. If pointing to the history of boxing and the majority of the greatest being black, it is in part due to the stability of the times and, as I mentioned above, a lot of blacks turning to boxing as a way out of the depression they were in. I'm sure that if there was a study of the general demographic of the boxing gyms at the times, most of them would have been filled with black athletes looking for a way out and looking for success and stability through that. The majority of white knobs would have been doing it for a past time as their family expected them to go into business etc.

Let's just drop the whole 'vs' thing guys. It does get boring, and childish, very quickly.
