The cut stopped bleeding fairly quickly; fighters consistently fight with bigger and deeper gashes effectively. If he defended it during the next round, his corner should have been able to stabilize his cut by the 5th round and he could have gone on to win the fight if he had it in him.
IMO, Rahman didn't have the heart to fight with a cut and knew that a master boxer like Toney would be able to pick him apart. He was also getting frustrated that he couldn't land any big punches and Toney started to consistently land flush counters on him.
