Erik Morales: "Mexican Fans Are Too Hard on Chavez Jr"

Former three-division champ Erik Morales felt the Mexican fans were too hard on the performance of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last Saturday night in Mexico. In the main event of Top Rank's "Latin Fury" card, Chavez Jr. faced his toughest opponent to date, Matt Vanda, and struggled to win a split-decision after ten-rounds. [details]

Mexicans cheered Chavez Sr. when he eeked out a draw against Whitaker. But they now boo Chavez Jr if he gets a questionable split decision win over an unknown.

I can see they're point. Whitaker wasn't as engaging like Vanda but he did beat Chavez Sr. Perhaps it was Sr's performance to keep winging at the elusive Whitaker that made them cheer? So when an in your face guy like Vanda isn't KO'd by Jr, the fans let Jr know that he has not met their expectations.

Also the scoring was pretty wild, too.

I think he's like 50 and 0 or something (and still a prospect).

Think a small, hispanic Tye Fields with a better defense and left hook.

Oh come on. He's got all the fundementals of a decent boxer and he ****s the liver like his dad. He's still learning and he stays busy. He'd be better off not getting so much TV coverage as this makes the fans expect too much.

this fight was a wakeup call for him, he looked winded in rounds 9 and 10 and if Vanda had any real power his ass would have been on ***** st.
