Gainer had to reject Khan offer
Derrick Gainer has revealed that he was offered the chance to fight Amir Khan in Manchester on September 6.
However, the former WBA featherweight champion had to reject the bout as it would have led to logistical problems for his stable-mate Roy Jones Jr., who is scheduled to fight Joe Calzaghe in New York’s Madison Square Garden a fortnight later.
As a result, Gainer will instead feature on the Jones-Calzaghe undercard. However, Smoke has not given up on the idea of one day sharing a ring with Khan.
"With Roy fighting on September 20, it would be hard to have our people travel to England and back with Roy winding down his camp for Calzaghe around that time,” the 35-year-old American told **********.com.
"Once I take care of this business on September 20, I'd love to fight him so I hope they offer the fight to me again. Doing it later this year or early next is fine with me."
