I am back from the pub!In his autobiography, Chris Eubank states he didn't want to fight Roy because he would lose. Pick it up.
Nigel Benn admits the only reason why he requested $10 million to fight Roy was because he didn't really want to. Although to his credit he says he was just tired of boxing after McClellan.
I find it interesting people give these guys such great shots. They sure didn't think so. And after watching Benn lose to Sugar Boy Malinga and then watching Roy knock Malinga into next week, I don't even know why it's a topic.
I only said they would have the best shot. You can pick and choose matchups that reflect favourably or ill on any set of fighters, but it doesn't really mean much. Try for example Benn destroying the Iran Barkley who later became one of Toney's career best wins, it doesn't make Toney worse than Benn neccessarily.
I have no doubt that Benn and Eubank had little great desire to face the P4P best boxer in the world, but that type of thing goes both ways, I very much doubt Jones would have like to fight either of them either, there is always the profile barrier when discussing matchups between UK and US boxers and history (particularly SMW history) shows that the champs from these countries do not exactly beat paths to each others doors. It doesn't make sense for any boxer to risk what he has in a fight the public has no huge desire to see, and that happens in the UK and US.
I would just like to see some US fans stop underrating fighters simply because they are British. McLellan was supposed to destroy Benn, Lacy was supposed to destroy Calzaghe, but each time the result was surprise to many. The Brit SMWS under discussion were without doubt the best SMWs of Jones era other than himself and thus would have had the best chance to beat him.Comment

Good post..I don't think anyone could have.
Not at 175 right after the Griffin rematch and Hill fight. That's also why it's not rocket science that people consider him one of if not the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time.
Remember there's a huge difference between being the greatest fighter of all time..........and the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time.
Someone could claim that Jones never fought a real challenge (Which is ******, lol because he toyed with Toney and clearly out pointed Nard)..........but the mediocre fighters he faced were totally laid to rest.
I don't think the sport has seen that dominant of a fighter, maybe ever. I mean there was that stretch where he never lost a damn round, for how many fights? guys like Gonzalez, Harding, Hall, Kelley, and Woods aren't jokes...........Roy made them to look as such.
I do think that NOBODY could've beaten ROY at 160-175 in his prime..
He just utterly dominated every opponentComment

Its funny. Ive read different. In his autobiography, Chris Eubank states he didn't want to fight Roy because he would lose. Pick it up.
Nigel Benn admits the only reason why he requested $10 million to fight Roy was because he didn't really want to. Although to his credit he says he was just tired of boxing after McClellan.

Eubank has been quoted as saying he refused to fight Jones earlier in his career because Jones wasnt a big name then. He would call Eubank and tell him to stop ducking but Eubank didnt fight him because he wasnt his mandatory or a big name. But later when Jones had beaten Toney etc and Eubank asked him for the fight, Jones didnt return his calls.
Benn has been quoted as saying he offered to fight Jones but he took on Hopkins instead. Its also well known that Jones beared a lot of (******) resentment towards Benn for his "part" in the McClellan fight. And Benn himself wasnt really the same fighter after that.
Benn lost to Malinga when he was past his best and clealry had lost some of the fire that made him so great.
Out of the two, I think Eubank would have the best chance at beating Jones. Benn wouldnt stand much of a chance but you never knew if Benn would land a lucky punch.
Its a shame this all comes down to opinion and we'll never know. Would've been some classic match ups.Comment

PM me and I'll get the EXACT quote from Eubank for you straight from his autobiography. Quite an admission. Its funny. Ive read different.

Theere were a lot of reasons those fights didn't happen - network issues, promoter issues, etc.I am back from the pub!

Such a shame.
As for McClellan destroying Benn, I'm not sure. By the time Gerald fought Benn his style had taken a turn for the worse. He was much more of a one-punch guy and left himself easily exposed. He simply wasn't the McClellan of his early years.
I never tabbed Lacy to beat Calzaghe. In fact, I used to write for a little known site back then known as 15rounds.com and I was the only person to pick Calzaghe via UD.Comment

Bob Foster..he could pick Roy off from a distance
Archie Moore..he could get inside and exploit Roy's inability to fight off the ropes.
I also think a PRIME Mike McCallum would beat him as well since the shot version did wellComment

Chris Eubank: People always ask me why I never fought Roy Jones. The reason is simple, Roy Jones was never my mandatory contender and I was never his. He used to call me up over the phone and say "Eubank, stop hiding and give Roy a shot", but at that time he was not a big name and there would of been no need to fight him, it would of been abit random. When 1996 was on the scene, I wanted to fight Roy Jones in his backyard and even told HBO that I'd publicly bet $1,000,000 on knocking him out in the 1st-round. When I rang Roy Jones, he hung up on me every time. He wouldn't fight me when I was no longer champion, he didn't want to take risks you see. I can say this about a fight with Roy Jones, if he had been my mandatory I would of fought him, I am a professional. People think that I would of made a fight with him become boring and louzy, I would not have done. If you hold back against that guy, he will hurt you and stun you before you have the chance to throw your best shots at him and by then it's too late because they won't be your best shots, you will be hurt and stunned already. If you give him the chance to view and the time to get set, he will land first because his quickness and timing is that good. That's why I would of made it an all-out war with him, so that I'd have more chance of throwing my best shots at him and so there would be less chance of him landing his best shots on me. You don't want to make life easy for him, I would of stood as good a chance as anybody of beating him. Roy Jones would of came out of the fight in bad shape, but I would of came out worse off!Comment
