Klitschko vs. Thompson: The Pre-Fight Report Card

By Cliff Rold - Bigger has rarely been better in Boxing even if it’s sold more tickets. There were though days when the best of the Heavyweights could compete for the hearts of Boxing fans along with the best of their smaller compadres.

interesting article, and very good break down by the writer. the fight could be boring, and be boring very early, im still looking forward to it

wlad's chin gives every fighter hope out there. ive been noticing that whoever wlad fights is an underdog, understandably, yet they have a potential recipe for an upset.

with wlad, he wins, either knockout or decision, but decisevly. his opponents either lay down or lay out. ko is the only way

i really feel sorry for Klitschko for if he is to unify all four major titles and he should as i see peter as the only threat at the moment i don't think he will be able to gain the recognition he will deserve in history as the division is in such disarray

This takes us to the points that Mojack and myself were discussing a few days ago about comparing different boxers from different eras, its virtually impossible to do objectively.(http://www.boxingscene.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=194182)
If Wlad can unify the titles he will gain the respect of the informed boxing fans out there as its still a fantastic achievement, it wont be able to be judged objectively against Tysons similar achievement etc as the eras and the division are so different now.

Possible upset? Yea right. Wlad will make this easy. People will wish the fight lasted longer than it does and then he will get boo'd like he was in the Ray Austin fight. He just can't win. He will either destroy him or make it too boring. Fans will not let Wlad get away with anything because he is not the typical heavyweight from the last , say 30-40 years.

The division that Tyson dominated from 86 - 89 was not much stronger than today's, if at all, though Tyson's domination of it was impressive.

I posted this in another thread in response to Thompson's age:

In boxing years I'm not so sure Thompson is older.

Wlad is 32, but has 53 pro fights, has lost 3 times by KO and has been knocked down 11 times.

Thompson is 36, but only has 32 pro fights, has never lost by KO and has never been knocked down.

Wlad turned pro almost 12 years ago. Thompson turned pro 8 1/2 years ago.

What credit Klitschko deserves in history? For what? He beat Chris Byrd and got stopped by Brewster, Purrity and Sanders. Klitschko will go down as what he is...a good solid fighter with a good career. Anyone who thinks he's now, or ever will be, some sort of ATG is way off.

Possible upset? No way Klitschko stops him in 7 or less.

It would be funny if someone young, hungry and good like Haye captured one of the belts forcing Wlad to a big fight to unify. I have little doubt that, in that case, Wlad would never attempt an unification.

Wlad would knock Haye's head off his shoulders.
