Soto, and Joe Calzaghe would disagree with you and so do I.

Wow...he should have to ref a bunch of low importance fights first to show he can still do the job right before he ****s up another important one.

He should have retired by now. He used to be a great ref but now he is making some big mistakes and I hope he doesn't spoil this fight.

You only have to watch some of his fights over the past 8 months even. The Hatton/Mayweather fight, Calzaghe/Hopkins and Soto/Lorenzo fights were examples of extremely poor refereeing.

Remember the Samuel Peter fight? Klitschko holds a lot, everytime at close range, where his opponents could land something to the body.

Under fire by U.S. media for his handling of the Humberto Soto-Francisco Lorenzo clash two weeks ago in Las Vegas, referee Joe Cortez will be back in the limelight on Saturday. The "Fair but Firm" Cortez will be the third man in the ring for the HBO-televised IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight championship fight between world champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBO mandatory challenger Tony Thompson in Hamburg, Germany. Judges will include Michael Pernick (USA), John Stewart (USA) and Manfred Küchler (Germany).

How the **** does this guy keep getting assignments? Cortez has become the 'x factor' in recent boxing matches; the fighters need to determine the winner not the ref. I hope he doesn't **** this one up too much...

WOW!!! if this is true, this is incredibly disappointing. Cortez should have been retired about 4 or 5 fights ago. He's not the same as before and gets TOO involved in the fights...what a shame
