Will there ever be someone better than Sugar Ray Robinson?

Is he like Michael Jordan? Who will always remain the BEST basketball player ever.

It's not likely, anytime soon, that anyone will surpass Sugar Ray Robinson. I'll tell you why.

Robinson is not the best for no reason. He's the best because he beat ALL the best during his time. Fighters today don't HAVE to go through what Robinson HAD to go through.

Muhammad ALI opened a LOT of doors for boxers. Before him, only FEW fighters made money. During his time other heavyweights made money BECAUSE of him. After his time ALL boxers made money. Unfortunately, so did the promoters. The one bad thing about ALI's effect is that most promoters are greedy sharks who want to play God at the expense of fighters.

For this reason, fighters don't HAVE to face the best available competition. DeLa Hoya can go ALL THE WAY to 160 and get KO'd while avoiding the best 154 fighter, Winky Wright. Floyd Mayweather can go to 154, fight a boring money fight with Oscar, while avoiding the Best 147 lb. fighter.

We don't KNOW who is better between DeLa Hoya and Trinidad. They only fought once. Oscar beat him up but Felix got the decision. The only solution, DO IT AGAIN. Fighters don't HAVE to do that if they don't want to. It almost seems like a crime that Oscar and Floyd can ''waltz'' around the ring, make a zillion dollars so Floyd can say "F@#K Y'all" and bow out. Leonard didn't HAVE to give Hagler a rematch.

Robinson went 5 for 6 against Lamotta so we KNOW who is better. He went 120 wins, against the BEST competition, before spotting Lamotta 9.5lbs. in his first loss. They were 1 and 1 then. Robinson beat him in the rematch (their 3rd) THREE WEEKS LATER!!. WHO does that Today? Who HAS to?

Robinson only missed one during his time. He never fought Charley Burley. I'm sure Robinson had nothing to with that. IT was likely politics.

I doubt there will ever be another better.

Even if there is Someone who is definitely better than Ray Robinson, will boxing critics ever admit it? Will he always remain as "THE UNTOUCHABLE" ?

    Rant over!

There could possibly be someone better eventually but it's extremely unlikely that he will come along in my lifetime.

I doubt we'll ever see a better career than Robinson had. Talent can be argued. Who you fought/fight can't. Theres too much money today and to many titles allowing fighter to fight less, and against watered down competition. By watered down I mean if one guy has one title and a second guy has another and they were the 2 best fighters in their division, neither would be forced to fight according to the rules by their governing organization. When Robbie fought he pretty much had to fight all the best, and sometins more than once. In my opinion it was much harder to become and stay a champion back then, between same day weigh ins and only 8 or so recognized weight classes vwith one recognized champion. We'll never see another fighter accomplish what Robinson did.

career wise it's almost impossible. fighters now fight only 3-4 times a yr at max. and there's a lot of emphasis on undefeated records now so promoters usually pick carefully a good prospect's opponents and hope he'll stay undefeated up to the big money fights so they can cash in.

skill wise yes there could be better fighters however no one will ever again accomplish what Robinson did, unless they are will to fight 200 times which simply willing never happen again. And even then, people are ******ed these days and focus too much on undefeated records, so if someone goes 176 and loses 16 times they'll be like "but calzaghe retired undefeated!" lol
