Felix Tito Trinidad had turned 27 years old in the year 2000. Judging from that stand point to Miguel Cotto who is at this time 27 years old what can we say.
First off I want to start by making something very very clear and I think that we will all agree. Many fighters who can be determined as great fighters need to have had there time in the sun with other great fighters within the division. This gives them the oppurtunity to fight ppl who are sometime P4P great fighters and other very solid competition.
Lets start it off with this
Tito Came into his game @ a time when from front to back the Welterweight division was hands down the best division in boxing. And by the way with names like...Whitaker, DLH, Camacho, Campas, Chavez, Mosley, Quartey...ETC ETC.....this @ the time was one of the strongest divisions in the history of boxing. From top to bottom there were some P4P fighters and great fighter all around.
This in fact will enhance Tito's legacy forever. Even if he wasn't able to pile up victories over P4P greats like DLH and Whitaker, and dominating undefeated fighters like Campas and Oba Carr. He would still be known as a great fighter because of the level of competition that the man had been in the ring with. To me at this time, not the later years although he did take on some more stellar competition after his hayday...He was able to establish himself as a fighter who really took the the best opposition @ this given time frame.(Not to mention that in 2000, he moved up to 154 and Beat Vargas who again at the time was undefeated, and since this defeat, Vargas was never the same).
Tito hurt ppl, they fought him and he demolished them. Fighters like Vargas, Carr and even Campas, they got beat up and beat up bad. Neither of these fighters went on to o have much success after the Trinidad loss. Vargas and Campas became transtitional champions after, but neither fighter was able to have a real career defining victory after there first defeat.
Point being said.....Miguel Cotto is at the age of 27 now, and yes he has a decent resume with wins over fighter as Mosley and Judah, Malignaggi and we'll throw in former WBO champ Ricardo Torres, but he has yet to truly have that career defining fight that Trinidad had already been involved in on numerous occasions with DLH, Whitaker, Vargas, Campas, Camacho.
Now im not saying it's Cotto's fault because lets face it thus far he's wiped out every man who has stepped up to him. And yes he has a huge showdown coming up on July 26 with Margarito, but even still it doesnt seem to have the same build up as say Tito V DLH.......or even @ the time 2 undefeated fighters Tito V Campas.
Now don't get me wrong i think Cotto will in fact be on to great things (even more now that Mayweather isn't there to beat him), but is it more of a case where Felix came up @ a time where there were soo many solid, good, P4P fighters in his weight division. Where as now, Cotto doesn't really seemingly have those huge fights available, and even soo if he were to somehow land a fight with DLH, how much real credit could we give him if he were to beat the man. Flloyd beat him and beat him good, good win......yes....great win.....no.
I guess the point im making is that I think that Tito was an ATG yes, and someday maybe Cotto will be as well. But Tito was lightyears ahead of him at the respected age of 27. Tito was a seasoned vet, who had won every big fight and beat every big name that he could possibly had beaten. At this time Cotto has beaten them all, but how many big names will we remember him for at this point in his career????
