There is some truth in that, but he was also blackballed. He was supposed to fight Bonecrusher Smith but Smith got the call-up for Witherspoon. Green definitely would have beaten Smith and gotten his title shot around '87.Comment

What started his fall from grace was when him and David Bey were sparring and Carl King (who managed Bey) told Don that Green was "too competitive" when he was sparring with Bey. For whatever reason, "Blood" disliked David Bey and tried to turn every sparring session into a street brawl. That began his "rep" as being uncontrollable and a risk for his manager(s).
Then, when Holmes hired Mitch Green as his sparring partner for the Renaldo Snipes fight, Green started getting on Don King about not getting him big time fights. After finally getting a "big fight" against Berbick, he lost the decision and basically quit, or, as he says, "lost interest" in boxing. He was called upon to fight Tyson and I think acquitted himself well in that fight. He didn't just hug him all night like Bonecrusher did.
Personally, I always liked how Green conducted himself. He brought a little of the WWF-type hype to his interviews. He was funny without really trying to be. Definitely a character!Comment
