  • The Myth of Sven Ottke

Many people on here regard Ottke as a joke but was he really that bad?

Sven Ottke turned pro late after wins over Antonio Tarver, Chris Byrd, Michael Moorer, Zsolt Erdei and Juan Carlos Gomez to name a few finishing with 256-47-5 in the Amateurs. After turning pro he debuted on a 6 rounder against not so bad opponents and fought his first 10 rounder after only 8 fights, I think the decent opponents early contributed to his lack of KOs on his record which is fair enough, right?

Whilst Ottke was obviously not an unbeatable fighter, he still managed to rack up quite a few good wins; Glen Johnson, Anthony Mundine, Charles Brewer (x2), Byron Mitchell, Mads Larsen and Robin Reid.

Albeit he had some very close decisions at times, he certainly isn't a bum as he is frequently made out on here. WAR OTTKE!

Holy ****. This is actually a Ricky post I agree with.

The whole "Ottke is an overrated ******" thing is ridiculous. Sure he was boring and a little protected but he was technically a very good fighter.

He gets ridiculed a lot because he's been a unified title holder, but he's not black and American. In some peoples' minds, a boxer needs to be black and American or else he's not really any good!

That's the sad truth of it.

Yeah, it's because he's not black, or American. Get the mother **** outta here. Let's not forget how protected he was. Or the fact that he got how many (?) gift wrapped decisions? I'm not saying he wasn't talented. But the whole "because he wasn't black or American" is just grasping at ****ing straws. Everything HAS to be about race, or nationality, eh?
