Calzaghe Haters: What Is It You Don't Like?

Abraham showed that all you have to do to be liked is go out and win in spectacular fashion, nobody cares where you are from when you do that.

I for one don't like Calzaghes slapping style, and the fact that he's trying to make himself look good by fighting guys past their prime.

I also didn't like that stoppage against Manfredo, I know it wasn't his fault but I doubt he said much against it...

The only past prime guy Calzaghe has actually fought is Hopkins, and he happened to be the Ring LHW champion at the time, and easily the most credible opponent for Joe. Before that he unified his division by beating the two younger champs in it, one of whom, lacy, was supposed to destroy him. You can't say he only fights past prime guys because it isn't true.

Now he is coming up to what he says will be his last fight, at the age of 36. If there is one boxer most agree would have beat Calzaghe prime for prime it is Roy Jones, and this just also happens to be the biggest, most watched and financially most rewarding fight available. The other option is a young champion, a weight class lower than you ever fought in your career and who has one defence of his title, in a fight that in betting terms, you would be a heavy favourite to win comfortably and which would net you a sizeably smaller purse. Which would you pick?

B) Kessler is the SMW #2, and is favored to be a close match for the likes of Tarver, Taylor, Hopkins and others. So if you think he's not great, your in a minority.

C) Most Joe fans give plenty of credit to Hopkins so where that's from I don't know. To the contrary, some Hops fans gave loads of credit to Hopkins pre fight for beating Wright and Tarver, then said he was shot against Joe.

I have to defend my boy Kessler, he had a hand injury when they fought even though he denied it. He has had surgery after the fight. Of course Kessler did not cancel the fight so a loss is a loss, but still.

Yes it was incredible, and this against the best SMW America had to offer at the time. James Toney gets an amazing amount of credit for doing simlilar things to Michaele Nunn and Tim Littles, but with Calzaghe its just seen as being worth nothing.

Answer me who is Kessler best win against who Mundine. You actually consider Kessler as a great fighter. You don’t just label very fighter great it should be for a few individuals. Mundine was ranked 3 isn’t he before he moved down to MW, shows you that quality of that division.

Calzaghe should get credit for the adversity and the knockdown comeback. Hell i found it really impressive at the time. I remember the fight and remember the Ring doing a small bit on it. Good stuff.

Another 50 who think he's a good fighter but overrated a bit.

Well, to be fair, Toney gets a lot of criticism as well, just like Calzaghe does. Some praise his performance against Nunn, some call it a fluke. It's always like that.

Depends on your use of the word 'great'.
I certainly would not call Kessler 'great' although I'm a fan, he is a very good fighter but he needs to fight and beat the best opposition out there to prove himself as truly great.
