great inital post btw i think you hit alot of points dead on, especially about uppercuts and body/head hooks on the inside showing that khan doesn't have the ability to improve and adapt in the ring. i think you can attribute part of this down to the change in trainer, oliver harrison would have just said to khan follow the blueprint of the gary st clair carry on popping the jab and control the fight.

also agree that khan awesome offense is what has lead to alot of people giving him the contender tag before he has actually earned it; his inside fighting, defensive skills and ring generalship need alot more work especially considering how weak his chin is.

but ring generalship only really improves by shadowboxing and more importantly gettin in the ring with better fighters which considering his last showing isnt gonna happen.

imo khan needs to team up with mayweather he is a very good defensively savvy coach who knows the boxing game.

nice to see a proper boxing discussion on here - a good thread.

I hear what you're saying about Khan needing to get in with some better fighters before he can really master ring generalship. Problem is, that's the one category you generally expect a young prospect with huge potential to almost intrinsically exhibit- by sheer value of overmatching their lesser opponents so completely. I mean, if Khan had a better offense, with faster hands, good pop, and is the taller man with the longer reach, why on Earth couldn't he force Gomez to fight HIS way? Instead, Gomez baited Khan into little mini-brawls in the middle of the ring. That doesn't bode well for Amir if you ask me. In fact, that bothers me almost as much as his poor defense. His inability to outclass an opponent in a way that shows he can control the action against a lesser man and execute his gameplan effectivley- and remember, Gomez wasn't meant to be a serious threat to Khan. He was limited at best.
