Yea, I heard that as well but then I heard Bert Sugar talk about it saying that He won the round without throwing a single punch.

My personal pick is for Radar Benitez.

Nicolino Locche is up there too.

Herol Graham wasn't the absolute best but defininitely the most underrated defensive wiz.

Nadal I posted about the artois championship to you the other day. Great final, I thought Nadal would lose to Rod**** when the match was underway cause' Rod**** was winning games on his serve alone. Nadal will win wimbledon this year.

Not the best, but Michael Nunn at least deserves a mention.

Fingers crossed, man... I actually was more worried about Djokovic that Nadal.. He was down 3 love in the first set and I was thinking ahead but damn- he impressed me with the effort he put out there.

Let's not forget that Federer dominated his own grass court tourney at the same time, though.. I wouldn't make Rafa the favorite just yet, though I expect him to make the finals.

Naahhhh, man he definitely didn't. That fight, surprisingly, was one of Peps more offensive fights. How that myth came about is really strange....? The actual reports of that fight from the news sources of the time have that fight being a brawl and even more funny is that they mention the exact round that Pep was supposed to have won without throwing a punch as one of the most aggressive in the fight with both guys throwing and landing big bombs!

Great story though. The other thing is, that Jackie Graves was not the type of fighter anyone could win a round against without throwing one punch. He was a great fighter.

As for the best ever; there are just too many with hugely different styles of defense. Locche was certainly one of the greatest at being able to simply stand in front of anyone, no matter how great, and make them miss everything!!! Now that guy was a freak! He beat some scarily good fighters.
Of course the great Pep is always a front runner for the best defense ever as well as being one of the best fighters full stop!
Miguel Canto was brilliant. Roberto Duran was certainly the greatest defensive fighter that based his fighting on offense. To be able to stand on the inside like he did and break down fighters without getting hit was just stunning! His slip and counter head movement on the inside was the best ever I think. I find that more impressive than being a purely defensive counter puncher as you're always taking more chances.
Pernell Whitaker goes with saying. He just had everything defensively a fighter could ever need as well as a fighters instinct.
James Toney, Floyd Mayweather, Hopkins etc etc for contemporary fighters.
Wilfred Benitez could have been one of the best if he had liked to train more. Perfect counter punch game. Just watch his fight against Cervantes!
Wright is the man to watch if you have big long forearms and a small head.
Ezzard Charles was one of the guys to use the 'Philly Shell' defense to great effect, as was the Aussie boxer Johnny Famechon back in the sixties. Famechon was an underrated defensive great. Perfect shoulder roll and foot movement!
