He is the best promoter we've got (and by "we," I mean boxing). But he has his *****...and that's just the nature of the beast.
Bob Arum is also not afraid of making mismatches and exploiting the hardcore hispanic fanbase.
He rips HBO for being in bed with Golden Boy and making mismatches but he has no problem cashing their checks for the aforementioned Cotto-Gomez and Pavlik-Lockett, not to mention his hopefully-kiboshed plans to do Pavlik-Rubio for crying out loud.
He makes a monthly Latin Fury PPV series that caters to the hispanic fanbase, and he exploits JCC Jr. as some great young fighter who, for some reason, still isn't stepping up his competition. Hmm...wonder why. $$$
He has given the runaround to his own guy, Joshua Clottey. Clottey had Judah fall in his lap thanks to a shower door and Judah's immaturity, and if that hadn't happened he would be lingering with no fight. Humberto Soto is in a similar situation...one loss and all the sudden he can't get a good fight, despite being seen by many as a top contender and a FORMIDABLE opponent for Pacquiao.
Speaking of Pac, he is being set up with a fight against Arum's own guy, David Diaz, in attempt for Pac to grab a lightweight belt because Diaz is clearly a weak titlist. He tried this same trick with Erik Morales but he couldn't get the decision. The only reason for this fight is for Pac to win a belt at lightweight, and he wouldn't be fighting Diaz if Diaz were not a Top Rank fighter. By the way, it should be noted that Rubio is a Top Rank fighter...I wonder why Arum wants Pavlik to fight him next.
Oh, and let's not forget the shameless exploitation of the Versus network and those pitiful cards featuring the legendary Tye Fields.
But nevertheless, Arum is the best boxing promoter there is, and I hope he keeps working to make sure GBP and HBO have to keep up with his pace.
