R.i.P Joe Calzaghe: 1993-2007, 45-1

Picking Roy Jones to defeat Joe Calzaghe is an opinion that can only be explained by an absolute denial of reality. Roy Jones is shot as hell. His legs are gone, his reflexes too, and so, outside of the odd turn back the clock jab, is his handspeed. He also never actually had huge power at SMW/ LHW either. In all of his recent 'succesful' fights he has looked frail and weak, much worse in fact than he did in any of his losses.

Mark my words, Calzaghe will beat him easily, probably on a TKO. The inability to see how good Calzaghe actually is astounds me. He is a terifically skilful boxer with timing and movement that are literally second to none around his weight class and in the absence of Mayweather he is probably P4P #1 in the world quite easily if we base the judgement purely on skill.

If you think that RJJ is that bad then I guess you yourself shouldn't give Joe any credit if he pulls off the victory. Why complain that fans won't give Joe credit when most of them feel this way???

That is inaccurate. RJJ at SMW was a very hard puncher. That was his prime weight. He had it all....power, speed, youth at 168.

Calzaghe deserves nothing for beating Jones. He is shot. period. Hopkins would easily win a 12 round decision over Jones like he did to Tarver, Anyone saying Jones would beat Calzaghe need to wake up.

...style wise, I think RJJ is better vs Calzaghe...I think you need to go into Calzaghe with a plan of out boxing him for 12 rounds and that's RJJ's strong point, out boxing his opponent...if the fight happens, and RJJ can come in shape and do what he does best, he'll make Calzaghe look silly...jmo...

You're not at all incorrect in that in Roy's prime, he'd be the best choice for a win against Calzaghe, certainly the favorite of all oddsmakers. And Roy still has the ring smarts and ability, but he no longer has the speed, conditioning or reflexes to get the job done. He'll put up a great fight for 4 to 6 rounds, maybe even win most of those rounds, but he'll start to fade quick after that and end up as bad, or worse, than he did against Johnson and Tarver. Everybody assumes that Calzaghe is a slow ****** oaf who couldn't mash a fly with his hardest punch, and anybody that thinks that way is either a complete idiot, new to the sport of boxing, or ....well, just a complete ****ing idiot. Check the guy's record, watch some more of his fights, paying particular attention to how he adapts to each fighter, and even closer attention to how easily he hurts his opponents with those flyswatters.

Ha ha. More fool them I say. Calzaghe will have a big reputation years from now, I'm sure. He is unique in the way he approaches boxing and can do things other guys around his weightclasses can only dream of. You just have to actually understand boxing to appreciate it, so not much chance round here.
