Normally I try to come on these boards not with the goal of arguing or engaging in verbal assaults on other members, but rather simply trying to offer my personal commentary as it relates to each article. However your example of saying that a Japanese person born in Mexico, is basically Japanese and not Mexican, while this is true it has no bearing on your point of Oscar De La Hoya being Mexican. Both his parents are Mexican. He grew up within the culture and although he is Americanized, in recent years he has gone out of his way to embrace his culture and give back to the local Southern California Latino Community. I just find comments like yours lacking in education of the differences as it pertains to heritage or familial lineage.
Oscar De La Hoya: "Floyd Didn't Want Cotto - I Do!"

DLH was going to fight PBF because it would have made money.
He wants to fight Cotto because he has a great marketing angle, it will be exciting, and people would actually want to watch this fight, as it's a guarantee to have loads of action.
One was easy money, which is why he optioned it first. The latter is a tough paycheck, but De La Hoya has never backed down from anybody. He has been a businessman far longer than Mayweather, and he sees money where others don't. Mayweather used money as an excuse to avoid getting a "1" in the L column.Comment

I don't know if this has been said before--and I don't take sides-- but I personally believe that Floyd his "retirement" in order so that the boxing world can take its focus off of him and on to other big name welterweights. It seems like a good idea when you think about it (assuming he's secretly planning on staying within the game). Floyd retires, no more focus on Mayweather (it'll gradually wear down), Oscar will net whoever wins in Cotto/Margarito (possibly) and allow Oscar to make a lot of money in his last (or next to last) fight, all the while giving his opponent A LOT of exposure, which could be enough to warrant a lucrative fight with Mayweather (assuming the victor of Cotto/Margarito BEATS Oscar, particularly Cotto).
What better way for Mayweather to solidify his status among everyone who might still doubt him, while making a lot of money. A fight with Cotto would mean taking on another prime undefeated fighter, now a well known figure after having been seen with De la Hoya...it's perfect.
Having said that, I'm not defending anyone. Just saying what I think.Comment

I see people are still eating up DLH's bull**** while hating on Floyd. Everyone talked nothing but **** when Floyd was gonna fight DLH and/or Hatton again. But DLH chooses to fight Mayweather again (although you all claim there was no sense to do it again), then goes after Hatton (who was "too small" to fight Floyd, yet somehow DLH gets a pass for the size diff). Now he's going after Cotto or Winky; Two guys Floyd offered fights to in the past (although the Winky fight was obviously never realistic). Face it children, Floyd ****ed DLH out of millions by walking away from a fight he never intended on fighting.Comment

Because in some ways its true and some ways it isnt. Cotto at this point is still mostly a puerto rican drawn in new york and he isnt exactly a superstar at this point outside of the sport. PBF and his advisors (Haymon/Ellerbe) likely felt Cotto could become even bigger later on in the year. However, Cotto is the biggest fight in the division that PBF ruled, therefore to me, the money shouldnt have mattered, however im not the one taking the punches, so i cant sit here and tell another fighter what to do, but seriously, PBF should have just ****ing fought him.
On the flipside, De La Hoya could easily play up the Mexican/Puerto Rican rivalry, so for him, the money is big just based on the fact that you have 2 latino fighters from opposing countries squaring off, so for him, its a little easier to market in that regard. You see what im saying?Comment
