I think when you compare it to good comp... which to me is the 80s fab four... and the 70s heavyweight division... THATS good competition
People were lucky to be treated to the 70s heavyweights and the fab four. Those are special exceptions.
Even then you could argue that Hagler's opposition wasn't the best and the wins that truly made him a star (Hearns and Duran) weren't fighting in their best weight classes. You could say that Mugabi was overrated too. Of course none of this is true, but still you could do it.Comment

Moving up is ONLY impressive when it's to face somebody worthwhile. It was interesting how many people were looking to fight Maskaev when he won a title.
RJJ - Ruiz is an ideal example of cherry picking. Don't claim to be a heavyweight champ when Lennox is still walking the walk.
The 'greats' as we know them all really only aimed at 'names' at weights above them.
If Pavlik faces Calzhage that will be a major plus in Pavlik's resume, win or lose.
It especially looks good as Pavlik is doing a decent job of clearing the middleweights out.
In the end I like to see a fighter clear out a division or face names. Moving up for the sake of facing 'A.N. Other Biggerman' is useless unless it's someone of good repute.Comment

Ricardo Lopez had a somewhat hanging career despite not moving up.
Although he's one of my favorite all-time fighters, I was frustrated when he retired. Why couldn't he just swallow a donut and move one weight up? Who knows what he could have achieved up there.Comment

Wilfredo Gomez did something similar, spent the majority of his career at 122 compiling 20 defense there, moved up once to fight Sanchez, moved back down but then moved back up for his last few fights.Comment

I say clean up the division whether weak or deep, then move up to challenge the best fighters. dominating a weak division is weak.Comment
