    Jack Dempsey - weak?
Rocky Marciano - doesnt punch hard?
Joe Louis - older version of Rocky Marciano?
Muhammed Ali - no power, basic?

Seems like you haven't ever watched them dude. At least I hope so. Cause if you watched them and came to these conclusions you'd have absolutly no idea of boxing at all. Your post is not only ignorant its pretty ****** as well.

Jack Dempsey - was a great puncher, a swarmer that cut the ring of brilliantly, dominated his era, threw balanced combinations, involved a new way to fight

Rocky Marciano - one of the best right hands in the sports history, undefeated but never been really tested as well, good chin though, easy to cut.

Joe Louis - Maybe the best HW ever to step in the squared circle, never off balance, wonderfull combinations, great technichian, superbe movement, great counter puncher, perfect ring control, his fights look like a teaching book for any modern fighter.

Muhammed Ali - created his own style, faster legs then any HW before, brilliant movement, iron chin, unreached ring intelligence, found ways to win when his physicall advantages disappeared, fast combinations, symbol for the time he dominated the circuit.

Dude summed them up very well. Dempsey, the hardest to judge from the film cause watching anyone filmed with that speed and frames skipping would look uncoordinated, can still be seen to possess excellent footwork, bobbing and weaving, and combos on the inside. You say Louis is an older version of Marciano??? How dumb are you? Is the only films of these guys you've seen on the boxingscene forums?? How pathetic All one has to do is look at a prime Louis and see he was technically the best HW of all time-no-one has put together combinations with the speed, power, and accuracy Louis had since then. Boxing has not evolved, the skills have eroded as the trainers and gyms have dissapeared and closed and as the pool of boxers has shrunk. Are you trying to imply that someone like Vitali Klitschko or David Tua has more 'skills' then the older guys-all I have to do is watch the film and see a massive disparity. Nohero is wrong when he talks of advanced technique-the exact opposite has occured (name me one advance in technique in the past 50 years of boxing) You need to get some knowledge aquitted and stop trying to be some teenage smart-ass on these forums disparaging the old timers of which you know nothing. Get over it.

Of course training techniques, nutrition, suppliments, scouting and all-around boxing knowledge and experience have since grown & changed, not to mention the rules... but it's unfair for you to hold that against the old fighters for the era they fought in. The sport has evolved like anything else. Would you pit racecars from the 1920's to today's racing machines? Would you pit the Wright's primitive single-engine wooden plane against an F-16 fighter jet of today? You're completely ignorant to look at it that way, really.

What people are trying to say is that by witnessing the power, skill, technique, heart and innovation of older fighters within their own timeframe is how you judge them compared to today's fighters. Dempsey, Louis, Marciano and Ali were head & shoulders above anyone else within their respective eras, meaning they had the ability to go that extra mile as opposed to their peers... had Marciano been born in 1975 and was fighting today then he'd be just as dominant, he would have learned the newer, better techniques and strategies and he would be probably 220 lbs due to today's training and nutrition technologies.

If your favorite fighters of today did not have these LEGENDS to learn from they'd be less co-ordinated, less knowledgable and just less effective all-around. Pound for pound, era for era, any of the 4 fighters you mentioned would be sitting as the top 4 fighters in the heavyweight division today. They were all innovators, groundbreakers and elite specimens of the sport. No one today can rightly claim to be the king of the HW division because the talent pool is very even... no one today has the greatness to be head & shoulders above his peers. Therefore no one today can claim they would ever hold Dempsey's, Louis', Marciano's or Ali's jockstrap in the ring.

The sport has benifitted from natural evolution, it's a shame your brain hasn't.

Well done. Good karma for you.
