old fighters: have u ppl really seen them fight or just know their NAME

most of u guys on this forum are wreslting fans or ufc fans..and being that boxing is somewhat similar u join this board and throw around ur opinions..but my question is have u ppl really seen jack dempsey (small weak swings wildy in fights), rocky marciano (tuff yea..but slow small and no he dosent punch harder then a 240 pound man basic movements) joe louis( older version of marciano)muhhamad ali (story carrer ..charisma, talked alot, went to jail..but had no power..was basic..left left right)..have u ppl really seen these guys fight compared with today or are u just being the idiots that i think u are and acting like their unbeatable because their popular?

that happens with everything. i only comment on boxers i have seen. that way when i compare them to other fighters im not just blowing smoke up your ass. this happens all the time in rap too people always say that 2pac was the best but he is overrated because of his death, there are lots of rappers that are better.

Dude, you need to look a little closer at those old films, the ancient film quality doesn't make the damage and the impact of their punches blatantly obvious, and the frames being skipped every third or fourth frame does little to show their speed. Yes, some of them are not as technically advanced stylewise, but just because someone says something positive about one of them is no reason to imply that they don't even watch boxing. That left, left, right style that you talk about Ali using was knocking guys out, good fighters, Lewis could never have beaten Ali, just look at the films closer, you might see something.

Where are those bunches of wrestling fans? I made a thread about Japanese Pro Wrestling and only one replied. This is full of boxing fans, not wrestling. By the way, you can be a fan of all combat sports and study them enough, so that you can expose your arguments clearly. I like Boxing, MMA, and Pro Wrestling.

Have you seen these fighters? Joe Louis is an older version of Marciano? They fought nothing alike.

Ali, basic? He was everything but basic. Ali was one of the most unorthodox fighters to ever live.

Sorry Acquitted, but I will have to disagree also, at least with the opinion you have of Ali, Marciano, Louis and Dempsey.

All of them were truely great fighters in their own right. And in their own TIME period. While just about all of them would be small by todays' Heavyweight standards, they all had something that can't be taught in any era - heart...

I am old enough to see ALI most of the 70s, during that time he is called the greatest, I believe thats what he was then, and up to now, I still beleive thats what he is....

You're missing the point here acquitted... greatness is relative. You have to compare these fighters with the other fighters of their own era. Of course training techniques, nutrition, suppliments, scouting and all-around boxing knowledge and experience have since grown & changed, not to mention the rules... but it's unfair for you to hold that against the old fighters for the era they fought in. The sport has evolved like anything else. Would you pit racecars from the 1920's to today's racing machines? Would you pit the Wright's primitive single-engine wooden plane against an F-16 fighter jet of today? You're completely ignorant to look at it that way, really.

What people are trying to say is that by witnessing the power, skill, technique, heart and innovation of older fighters within their own timeframe is how you judge them compared to today's fighters. Dempsey, Louis, Marciano and Ali were head & shoulders above anyone else within their respective eras, meaning they had the ability to go that extra mile as opposed to their peers... had Marciano been born in 1975 and was fighting today then he'd be just as dominant, he would have learned the newer, better techniques and strategies and he would be probably 220 lbs due to today's training and nutrition technologies.

If your favorite fighters of today did not have these LEGENDS to learn from they'd be less co-ordinated, less knowledgable and just less effective all-around. Pound for pound, era for era, any of the 4 fighters you mentioned would be sitting as the top 4 fighters in the heavyweight division today. They were all innovators, groundbreakers and elite specimens of the sport. No one today can rightly claim to be the king of the HW division because the talent pool is very even... no one today has the greatness to be head & shoulders above his peers. Therefore no one today can claim they would ever hold Dempsey's, Louis', Marciano's or Ali's jockstrap in the ring.

The sport has benifitted from natural evolution, it's a shame your brain hasn't.
