    ..WILLIAMS And COTTO: The Hypocrisy...

NOTE: I'm speaking in a generalized way. I'm talking about the average fan(atic), not the rare exception.

I've noticed three things about the Paul 'The Punisher' Williams fans on this site. First of all, they all seem to likie Floyd Mayweather. Secondly, they they don't seem to be fans of Miguel Cotto. Finally, most want him to replace Floyd Mayweather as the best fighter inn the world are are quick to push him into the spot.

Right off the top of the bat, that's not a problem. You can like who you like, root for who you want and dislike whoever you feel sucks. I have no problem with that. The problem comes into play when Williams fans get VERY hypocritical. There are three types of people I hate in this world.... Liars, cheaters and hypocrites. And A LOT of these Williams fans are ENTIRELY hypocritical.

One of the major ways that A LOT of these fans have shown their hypocritical ways is by 'demanding' that the winner of Antonio Margarito and Cotto fight Williams. Claiming that they would need to prove themselves against 'the beast' in the division. And I agree with this sentiment, ENTIRELY.

Here where the Williams nuthuggers and I start to have problems. He beat the guy that Mayweather wouldn't fight and wins a competitive but clear fight and then moves on to Quintana. In terms of a TRUE test, anyway. He then LOSES to Quintana, a guy that had been BROKEN DOWN by Cotto and some write him off. Which I never agreed with. Then he comes back and catches Quintana early, sits down on his shots and takes him out powerfully in the first round. And all of a sudden, that makes him the divisions top dog?

Yet, Cotto, as stated, already took out Quintana, is fighting Margarito and fought Mosley before Mayweather wanted anything to do with him. So, Williams fans demand Cotto or Margarito fight him. Yet, when Mayweather was at the top, a guy that most Williams fans love, they never bought into that public demand thing.

'Fight who makes money, it's a business. I suck Floyds ****.'

Is what most of the Floydboys would say. Cotto didn't sell the number of PPVs that Mayweather did. Didn't bring in the attendance that Mayweather did. Did have the crossover appeal that Mayweather did.

Well, Williams/Floyd fans, Cotto is the star now. Williams doesn't bring the PPV number that Cotto has. Certainly couldn't sell out madison Square Garden. And Cotto lives in another country and has a endorsement deal with Ecko. Not to mention all the offers/deals he has going in his homeland.

Now I know some Floyd fans will say, 'Floyd is different. He's all time, Cotto is just making his mark.' The reason I don't buy that is that Mayweather MAY BE all time, but the BEST all time fighters, fought EVERYONE they could. The exclamation point was never big enough for the TRUE greatest of all time fighters. That's why Mayweather, if he stays retired, will NEVER break the top 30 all time.

Back to my point, it's somehow different because you HAPPEN to like Williams more. Williams can become the p4p champ to a lot of you, when alls he's down is something that Cotto has already done, or is more likely about to do.

Cotto might lose, and I wouldn't be entirely surprised. It's a pick 'em fight. But until then, Williams hasn't done much special. He's a good fighter, fun to watch and is virtually undefeated due to the redemption factor. HOWEVER, Cotto hasn't had to do that, and on his WORST night (against Torres) he adjusted DURING the fight. Yet, he's not able to be as great as Williams in some ridiculous way. That's insane, and ******.

    I think that's a very good post.

The only thing I would add is that I think some of the Williams fans are still allowing the great performance he put in last night to cloud their judgment. For example after David Haye KO'd Mac in his last fight, there was a poll in which it was asked who would win if Haye fought Wlad. It was pretty close, something like 60/40 for Wlad. If the same poll was created now I'd imagine it would be more like 80/20. I base this upon the comments made in all the Haye threads that I've seen recently.

So while I agree with what you say, I do think that part of it is just that people tend to get too excited by an impressive performance, especially an early KO.

But yes, there is a definite bias and double standards from certain posters, all of whom seem to be fans of PBF and PW.

If Cotto doesn't fight him that's his choice. I don't care. I have confidence in Williams abilities to the point that I think regardless of who he fights and when eventually he will be P4P king. Period.

Exactly. These Cotto fans called Floyd a coward, and now are using the same stance he did. I don't really care as I said, Williams will prove himself to be the best regardless.

Good post. Beating Carlos Quintana does not make Wlliams the man at all. Cotto did exactly the same thing and has Mosley and Judah on his resume too. Very soon he might have Antonio Margarito. Right now, and if he beats Margarito, Cotto is the man.

However, we shouldn't take away from Williams. He has beaten Margarito himself with a very impressive performance, and it now looks very much as though his "off night" against Quintana was exactly that, an off night. Those who wrote him off afterwards did so far too quickly. This is clearly a man with the potential to make real noise at welterweight, and whoever wins between Cotto and Margarito will have to think about facing him soon enough if they want to clean out the division and rise indisputably to the top. It wouldn't be a case of beating the man to be the man, but of beating all the other men to be the man. You can't be the indisputable best in your division until you've beaten all the guys who might beat you. Right now Paul Williams is definitely one of those guys.
