Williams proved a lot of people wrong tonight (Not a told you so thread)

This may be a bit long, but Williams has been an enigma to me the past couple months simply because I didn't know if he had a bad night against Quintana or if he was overrated. I'd backed the guy since day one, but he just looked so bad against Quintana I couldn't be sure. For the record, I had it 115-113 Quintana, but Quintana definitely won 5 rounds clearly whereas Williams may have only won 1 or 2 clearly. Oh well.

Anyway, Williams has always been a great finisher, but he's taken heat for fighting small guys often without a chance (see Sharmba Mitchell). It's been said Williams doesn't hit hard. Well, last night everything started with a headshot to Quintana. If I remember correctly, Cotto got to Quintana with bodywork and finished up to the head after (as he usually does). I think last night Williams proved he does hit hard and put that myth to rest.

I picked Williams to win in all my betting leagues, but I wasn't sure at all. He destroyed a guy that even caused Cotto a bit of trouble in 2006. I don't know about you guys, but Cotto-Williams is the fight to make right now and we should all be rooting for Cotto in July. Let's be honest. Williams beats Margarito even worse in a rematch, so nobody wants to see that. When the guy is on his game, he could be the best welterweight in the world. I always thought Williams was the only guy from 154 down that stood a chance against Mayweather and I still want to see that fight, but Williams would have to beat Cotto to make it happen.

This is a better posting style for you, Diego. None of the hate, just discussion.

He actually proved more people right then wrong (he was the favorite) but I was impressed with the way he won. He definitely added another factor for me to consider, his power. I think a fight between him and Mayweather would be more competitive than Cotto Mayweather.

        DEFINITELY

I can see Mayweather handling a lot of middleweights better than Paul Williams for real. Most middleweights are slow and looping with punches like Margarito, but Williams throws a lot and is fairly accurate.

I didn't see anything crazy to say "wow, Paul Williams is the real deal" all he did was land 2 good shots and KO'ed a careless Quintana on round 1, if people are quick to judge a boxer by a 1 round KO such as that one are just nuthugging. All this shows is that some fighters do indeed have "bad nights", and by the way Quintana is softer than I thought, that dude has a weak ass chin man. Ricans don't like getting hit.

then Cotto doesn't hit very hard because he hit Quintana flush in the chin a lot more than Williams. it took Williams one or two left hands to start that massacre.

I was impressed within seconds because he came out and stood his ground. He didnt walk forward. He let Quintana come to him, and he actually used his height and reach. You could tell he adjusted immediately.

If this isnt an abberation then it's scary because Williams does have some ridiculous physical advantages in there, and they are dangerous when used correctly. I guess we'll have to see. I'm not completely convinced yet.

He walked into Williams' punch and he didnt see it coming. That's why I'm not ready to crown him the next Tommy Hearns. Williams has always been a solid puncher when he actually sits down on it anyway. That's why Quintana had so much success when he moved and gave angles. Williams didnt have a chance to really sit down and trade. That's why I dont unerstand why he tried to walk Williams down.

Williams said I'm going to let him come to me so I can fight my fight, and Carlos walked right into the trap. The trap being a nasty straight left.

+1 You cant judge on a 1 round knockout, Plus I kept getting pissed watching Quintana keep his hands down, He shouldve been guarded up and he wouldve maybe made it through the end of the round to get his legs back.
