CBC's MMA card breaks viewing records!

Discover the latest Premier Boxing Champions news, top stories, and analysis for your favorite fighters on FOXSports.com!

EliteXC: Primetime, which marked the debut of live mixed martial arts on network television, was the most-watched MMA event in history, according to ratings released by CBS on Tuesday.

The landmark show drew an average of 4.9 million viewers during its two-hour, 51-minute telecast and spiked to 6.5 million between 11:30 p.m. and 11:51 p.m., when controversial Internet street-fighting icon Kimbo Slice battled Pride Fighting Championships veteran James Thompson. Ferguson (3-0) stopped the 6-foot-4 British behemoth on strikes in a controversial finish in the third round to remain unbeaten.

Those numbers surpass the previous highs set by the tape-delayed broadcast of UFC 75 in September 2007. That event captured an average of 4.7 million viewers and peaked at 5.6 million during the light heavyweight title match between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and two-time Olympian Dan Henderson.

In the 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. time slot, CBS ranked first with adults and males, second in households and viewers. EliteXC: Primetime, which also featured a bout between middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and UFC veteran Scott Smith, gained viewers each half hour it was on the air.

Even more promising was how it stacked up against previous programming on the network. Compared to regularly scheduled shows during the 2007-08 season, ratings were up 16 percent among 25- to 54-year-old adults, 57 percent among 18- to 49-year-old adults, 156 percent in 18- to 34-year-old adults, 121 percent among 25- to 54-year-old men, 173 percent among 18- to 49-year-old men and a staggering 357 percent in 18- to 34-year-old men.

The CBS Television Network and EliteXC parent company, ProElite Inc., announced in February a multi-year agreement to bring MMA to a major television network for the first time. CBS plans to broadcast four events per year in primetime on Saturday nights.

Im no MMA fanatic, but they have had certain cards that have pulled in 1mil+ buys. Not bad for a fairly new sport.

Everyone must have tuned in to see how poor that event was. As an MMA fan i thought it was outrageously bad.

because then people will say oh this mma is more exciting.

so its a double edge sword in some ways.

            hope it does great anyway.

can't blame them for trying to cash in on casual boxing fans who go both ways.
some, like me can sit thru a boring boxing match but not a boring mma.

sat thru my first mma last weekend. it played on regular tv. was impressed
with the gals bout and other bouts leading up to kimbo. man that kimbos face... ha ha ha hee. he was painfully tired . and all those forearms to the head with evidently little damage. funny as all get out. his fckg bowlingball head. he he! and that look on his face...he he... like he's about to cry from his mom slapping him. good for a laugh . consider it entertaining if i dont have to pay to watch and it immediatly follows boxing on the same channel.

              true.

but we need that kind of exposure in boxing.

we can't even get clips on espn highlights of big fights because they don't give the news networks permission to air them.

bad way of promoting the sport to non-fans. we need non-fans to see those highlights so that they'll be interested in seeing the boxer's next fight or a rematch.

i heard from a couple of people that it only did a 3.3.

But those are really good ratings. EVERYBODY is talking about Kimbo Slice, everywhere i go. People think he is a complete badass, the best MMA artist ever. Like Tyson back in the 80's

I'm very interested to see how the next Elite XC card does ratings wise, considering how bad this card was. they were lucky enough to have a main event that seemed to save it. But unless the next main event is Shamrock-Lee 2, i dont think they can do much better...

In recent years Gary Shaw has promoted classics like Corrales-Castillo and the Vasquez-Marquez trilogy.

Yet he decides to put Kimbo Slice almost being choked out as CBS Saturday night even?

Seems like casual fans outnumber hardcore fans in MMA as well as in boxing.
