The promoter of Danny Williams' farcical fight with Konstantin Airich has apologised to the British heavyweight champion and offered him a rematch.
Williams was furious at being docked three points and that the bell rang less than halfway through round six, before he stopped Airich in the seventh in Bilbao last Friday.
Promoter Ahmet Oner has revealed that he told the timekeeper to ring the bell early because he wanted to stop the fight to protect Airich, after Williams had fought back from being put on the canvas three times.
"I want to apologise for all the confusion and say I never meant to cheat Danny in any way," said Oner.
"The problem was down to poor refereeing and the local officials. I got angry with them and shouted at them to stop the fight and this led to the ringing of the bell with 1:30 to go.
"I then threw in the towel to end discussions. I wasn't trying to steal victory."
