He works on hand speed with the whole team, not only Calzaghe, and it's proven to be very effective. Theres a vid on youtube with Ricky Woodhall visiting Enzo Mac, and seeing the whole team training. It shows the minimal resources, Enzo Calzaghe's style, what he doesn't emphasise, what he does. He mentors them, guides them.

Joe Calzaghe - unbeaten, 10+ yrs SMW champion, undisputed no.1 SMW and LHW
Enzo Maccarinelli, belt holder, in the top 10 of his division, soon to face a top guy
Gavin Rees - previous SLW belt holder, top 10 in his division
    Bradley Pryrce - no bum
Nathan Cleverly - good young prospect at 20

These are some of the reasons he is trainer of the year and most agree. Do your research before asking, questioning such things, it's easy to find out why someones won something usually, wikipedia and google do wonders.

I have done my research, and I've still got questions. So what if he taught himself how to be a trainer? Sure it's a great accomplishment but it doesn't automatically make him a good trainer. In fact, I would say that it is a good indication that he probably doesn't know as much as others who had some formal training.

I look at his fighters and I see very little in the way of technique, which besides conditioning, is a trainers most important task.

I kind of want to be outraged by Enzo C. being the trainer of the year....honestly, he hasnt had much of a year at all, even with Calzaghe...but on the other hand, what other trainer has been so great? I feel like Im forgeting someone, but overall I think most trainers had a so-so year.
He was named trainer of the year for 2007.

ah, well that changes things, doesnt it? I guess they were impressed by Rees's upset winning of the title...even though both fighters looked like garbage.
Calzaghe did have a really good year though.

but...a lot of other trainers had fairly good years too.

He doesn't get established champs.. no, he builds them from the ground up!
Its crazy because you can spot a nacho fighter from a mile away just from the stance.

We're talking trainer of the year, not decade. If you are talking this year just about noone from nacho's stable has won a fight this year

getting fighters like bradley pryce, gavin rees (how the hell did he win a belt at light WW) and macca (before enzo calz he was was just a big puncher) on to the domestic scene is a big enough achievment. joe is brilliant because of his natural gifts his speed, granite chin and ring smarts but gettin all these other stndadr fighters to become contenders let along champions is something that should be applauded.
