I doubt that they'll be dancing on the streets in Cebu if (when?) Banal wins. The best they'll do, I guess, is exchange knowing smiles and winks.

Beating this Concepcion is not grist for the enthusiasm mill; not even among the most rabid Cebuano boxing fans. They'll appreciate the belt if Banal gets it, but they won't gloat. Well, I don't think they will. I think they know what they're getting.

I share the same sentiment buddy. Beating this concepcion will merely make AJ a paper champ BUT who knows he may get a real opposition in his first defense then that would be a fight we will really be proud of. That is assuming by the way that he beat this concepcion.

those who say **** on banal and other filipino fighters certainly did not see these boxers fight. banal is a very promising fighter with an unblemished record and hard-hitting at his very young age. he will soon break the hearts of die-hard mexican fans who hate the filipinos no end because their "legends" were annihilated by manny pacquiao one by one.

believe me, banal and other filipino boxers (donaire, concepcion, bautista, ciso morales) will soon invade las vegas like pacman did. and send frustrations among mexican fans who are crying babies...

It is what it is: a belt that is less than many but more than what AJ and most others have earned until now. Because of that, I see it as a start of what may be bigger things for the young prospect (I still think of him as a prospect).

If he wins in July, AJ shan't be the first world champ to get a belt by way of facing weak opponents. There's a veritable litany of names...Some of those who did moved on to greater things, others missed their chance, and still a good number were proven to be no more than "Flash In The Pan" types.

For Banal, the story continues...

Will he be counted among other Filipino champs like Pedro Adigue, Roberto Cruz, Morris East, Manny Melchor (who failed to hold on to their titles in their initial defenses)...Or, will he be another Villaflor, Navarrete, Small Montana (who beat the Hall of Famer Midget Wolgast for the NYSAC version of the World Flyweight title but lost it in a unification match against Benny Lynch after successfully defending it a few times))...Or, will his name be spoken with awe alongside those of Villa, Little Dado, Ceferino Garcia, Elorde, Pacquiao...?

The plot thickens, buddy, and, you and I shall be right here to follow the saga page after page.

Actually Guzman is Dominican, but anyways I looked in this thread because I knew Xcaret would have something to say. He'a as consistent as the sun coming up everyday. Any thread about a filipino fighter and he's in hear making a comment. I guess you can say at least he's consistent.

Roberto Vasquez was offered to fight Banal for the WBA Title but he refused the offer.The #1 and #2 ranked WBA Fighters was also offered but they declined it too...Concepcion was the only available fighter ranked by the WBA...Maybe on his first defense we'll see a better opponent...
