Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather at 147

This thread is to analyze both fighters careers at 147 pounds and 147 pounds, who has the better resume at 147, and who is the better welterweight. Let's start with Miguel Cotto

Miguel Cotto (WBA Welterweight Champion of the World)

    - Carlos Quintana : 23-0 (when they fought) 24-1 (now) TKO - 5
    - Otkay Urkal (inactive) : 38-3 (when they fought) 38-4 (now) TKO - 11
    - Zab Judah : 34-4 (when they fought) 36 - 5 (now) TKO - 11
    - Shane Mosley : 44-4 (when they fought) 44-5 (now) UD - 12
    - Alfonso Gomez : 18-3-2 ( when they fought) 18-4-2 (now) - TKO - 5

Carlos Quintana - Is a great welterweight, he was and is one of the top 10 Welterweights in the world, he is the current WBO Welterweight Champion of the World. Notable wins at 147: Joel Julio, Paul Williams.

Otkay Urkal - Not a known welter, but knew his way around the ring.

Zab Judah - Had a relatively good summary at 147, but great fighter and was one of the biggest threats to Cotto. Stunned Cotto in the early rounds of the bout. Was one of the top 10 Welterweights. Former WBC, WBA, IBF Welterweight Champion. Notable wins at 147: Cory Spinks, Cosme Rivera.

Shane Mosley - One of the Biggest threat to Cotto at the time, had a great summary at 147. Stunned Cotto a couple of times. Former WBC Welterweight Champion. Was and is one of the top 5 Welterweights. Notable wins at 147: Luis Collazo, Oscar de la Hoya.

Alfonso Gomez - Didn't present any real threat to Cotto, and was more of a "glorified" sparring session. Notable Win at 147: Arturo Gatti

Miguel Cotto resume at 147 is a great one, he has fought 3 of the top 10 in the division, and although having been stunned on several ocasions hasn't been knocked down in 147.

Floyd Mayweather (WBC Welterweight Champion of the World)

    - Sharmba Mitchell (inactive) : 56-4 (When they fought) 57-6 (now) - TKO 6
    - Zab Judah : 34-3 (When they fought) 36 - 5 (now) UD - 12
    - Carlos Manuel Baldomir (inactive) : 43-9-6 (When they fought) 44-11-6 (now) UD 12
    - Ricky Hatton : 43-0 (When they fought) 44-1 (now) TKO 10

Sharmba Mitchell - Don't know much about how he fights, basing on his resume at 147 fought big opponents but lost all the big fights.

Zab Judah - Had a relatively good summary at 147, but great fighter, Was one of the top 10 Welterweights. Former WBC, WBA, IBF Welterweight Champion. Knocked Mayweather down 1 time. Notable wins at 147: Cory Spinks, Cosme Rivera.

Carlos Manuel Baldomir - Relatively good fighter at 147 (basing on his resume). Former WBC, IBO Welterweight Champion. Notable wins at 147: Zab Judah, Arturo Gatti.

Ricky Hatton: He is a natural light welterweight, but at 147 things get complicated for him. Former WBA Welterweight Champion. Notable wins at 147: Luis Collazo.

Floyd Mayweather's Resume at 147 has been descent at best, he hasn't fought any real challenge to him in this weight class (except arguably Zab Judah).

The reason that I believe Cotto will win against Mayweather at 147 is that he is obviously a natural welterweight since he has a better resume in the Welterweight division, has fought fighters who have represented threats to him, has shown he has the skills necessary to beat Mayweather and although stunned in several ocassions hasn't been knocked down in his time as a Welterweight.

This thread was made because I felt that members were justifing their arguments by comparring both fighters careers in other weight classes, and maybe forgot the fight would be in 147, not in 140, 154 or in 135.

Reminder: This thread is about both fighter's resume at 147, not about their resume in other weight classes.

dan says: i don't think either floyd or cotto have fought the top welters......i mean cotto beating a 36 year old shane is good for him......it won't help him to defeat floyd......quintana was in over his head against cotto......and beat williams.........so i guess cotto fans can now use him as a guy who is respectable......now......lol......urkal is not a welter........and zab.....floyd beat baldy......the lineal champ....judah, mitchell who is not a welter.........and hatton.....a ranked pfp fighter..........floyd has faced pfp fighters in hernandez....chico, castillo and hatton.......cotto has faced.........?????.......

Cotto does have the better opposition on his resume at 147 and is probably the more natural welterweight of the two but sometimes skills overcome size.

First of all, I did say not to mention either of the fighter's resume in other weight divisions and just so you know Hatton is arguably a P4P since he has only fought in Light Welterweight and did struggle very much with Collazo.

Yes sometimes skills overcome size but it could be argued that Mayweather's skills haven't been tested in the Welterweight division.

I thought we saw the one of Mayweather's best performances against Hatton.

It was one of the best performances by Mayweather, but look at the opponent, it was Ricky Hatton, a natural light welterweight who struggled in his other welterweight fight against Collazo, Hatton at 140 is the best but 147, he is no where near the best. Whereas Cotto is a natural Welterweight and shouldn't be compared to Hatton, but if you're going to compare them both you must realize Hatton fought at the wrong division.

You honestly think, that Hatton and Cotto can be compared to each other in the Welterweight division? Like I mentioned before Hatton is a natural Light Welterweight, who fought in welterweight, whereas Cotto is a natural welterweight, who is superior to Hatton in every aspect in the welterweight division, and arguably superior to Mayweather.
