Ricky Hatton: The Hitman or a Marked Man?

By Cliff Rold - The reviews continue to come in and they are mixed at best. No doubt Ricky Hatton-Juan Lazcano was a box office success; 56,000 in the stands at the City of Manchester Stadium attest to that. In spots, it was even aesthetic success with the sort of solid action and heavy hitting that brings viewers back for more.

In competitive terms, it was not as successful. The in and outs of the bout itself were covered previously; now we look at the fallout. Even winning 117-111 on this scribes card, the appearance of vulnerability in Hatton (44-1, 31 KO) was obvious and raises the question of just who will be the man to knock him off his as the Jr. Welterweight champion of the world. It’s a question that will only build as he heads towards his fifth title defense. [details]

So what if Hatton was rocked? Cotto gets rocked in fights and gets a free pass for having a suspect chin. Cut Hatton some slack. When has a modern toilet-mouthed U.S. boxer drawn fifty thousand people to watch him fight? Not every fight has to be a Cotto-Gomez domination, or a Margarito-Cintron beatdown. A guy earns a hard fought decision against a game Lazcano, an underdog guy who was hellbent on making a great impression in front of a massive crowd against a big name opponent, and people give Hatton smack about it. Everyone that fights Hatton now will be giving 100%. Every fight is going to be hard fought.

that's all hatton can do about.

he is nearing retirement... his punches are not effective... he can't score knockdown against a nobody...

he should stop dreaming of a rematch with ugly boy floyd mayweather jr.

            AGREE 100%

Hatton still charged in with his hands down and got hit with a hook and is pretty lucky Lazcano either didnt give the shot the full beans or just doesnt have the power.. but he was in a fight and as he said he was ****ting his pants cuz of the massive crowd and it being a comeback fight. i thought it was a good fight and a good performance by both fighters. thats what a boxing is about, competition! not a one guy dominating another all the time, thats just bollocks.

It really doesn't matter how many people he draw. He's been exposed. Besides, those people are nuts anyway. His fights are just an excuse to go somewhere and get drunk. I mean they have made up all these songs after the guy like he's actually done something. You guys can say what you want about Mayweather but at the end of the day, he knocked your boy out. He's the champ! All Hatton's got is a damaged ego and a bunch of drunk fan's making up songs out of Christmas music.

Untuck your thong mate! Hatton is a bum! He fought an old tired Kosta Tszye and that was his claim to fame. This is typical . He hits the mainstream with an impressive record and as soon as he steps up in class he is exposed. He was really exposed against Collazzo but that one has been forgotten. Hatton is a fool to want to fight Floyd again. I don't think he's beat Judah,Cotto or any of the 'smaller welterweights'. He should do like Calzaghe and retire before the public demands they actually fight a quality opponent and get themselves exposed. I personally feel that they are two of the most over rated fighters in the game. One clinches, hits and holds and the other is a rapid sissy slapper.

I don't think Hatton is done yet, I give him another 2/3 years in the sport. i would like him to fight all the champs at 140.

I think it's pretty evident that he should not be in the same ring with the likes of Mayweather again. Granted styles make fights, but Lazcano didn't do much but when he did he landed and landed flush.

I don't think Pauli vs Hatton will be an exciting fight with both of them hugging for 12 rounds.

Floyd can cross Wembley Stadium off his list now...
