Why was Lacy rated so highly?

I know he looked pretty good against Robin Reid (not enough to deserve the hype, but he didn't look bad by any means).

I have heard that he struggled with Sheika pretty bad, although I admit to not having seen that fight.

I am watching Lacy vs. Vanderpool on ESPNClassic right now (it is the first fight on the Klitschko vs. Williamson program), and Vanderpool has kind of kicked his ass for the first three rounds.

So, tell me, what did Lacy do (other than knock people out when he was behind on points) that dazzled everyone so much? There are definately flaws present in his fights, so why did people brush over them?

maybe some of it had to do with his physical appearance. He looked like a beast

Because he had a lot of hype behind him (Gary Shaw especially was churning out favorable superlatives like a fckin machine), he had an unbeaten record, a world title, a killer left hook, a very impressive physique and America wanted him to be great. He wasn't.

The Sheika fight was on ESPNClassic a few nights ago too, I couldnt believe how much trouble Lacy was having with him. He was getting hit with shots constantly, it was like he had no defence...and its not like Sheika is an amazing fighter.

People were probebly impressed with how strong he looked and how hard he hit. he also had a pretty good chin from what Ive seen. and also maybe th division was stale...didnt seem like anything much was going on in it at the time, and Lacy starts making waves. I imagine that helped him out a bit.

As I've stated before it has to do with a couple of things:
1: Nobody gave a **** about the SMW division... hardly even the Brits. They knew of Joe but didn't talk about him. It was and is a ridiculously weak division that nobody cared about.
2: His brittle hands were continuing to break and the fight was considered being postponed canceled because of it.
3: Lacy was winning in impressive fashion w/ knockouts which always bring excitement out in fans.
4: His lock, his style, a belt, etc... the things like that add up.

And just as a kicker, Joe has looked better on the Lacy fight and after than he did in several of his defenses beforehand against guys like Salem and whatnot.

At least he tried though. I like fighters who seek to prove themselves as the best. Jeff Lacy felt he was the best and had no fear going into the Calzaghe fight. That I like.
