no but he had to lose alot of weight before the fight.
Was James Toney past it when he lost to Roy Jones?

I voted yes. His weight loss was the death of him. He looked sluggish as hell against Jones... and what did he do after that fight? He started dropping decisions frequently, and his only marquis wins after the Jones loss were Jirov at cruiserweight, and an ancient Holyfield.
Really, was the Toney that lost to Jones and in all of his bouts after it as good as the Toney that beat Michael Nunn and destroyed Iran Barkley? I contend no.Comment

Guess so...
I do think there is something to be said for a fighter's prime to consist of both physical prime and mental prime. If Toney was losing because of focus and weight issues (which he brought on himself), then there is something to be said for him being out of his mental prime.
Even though I am the only one who voted that he was past it, I do think it is encouraging that he did not do anything of real not other than the Jirov win after he lost to Jones.Comment

great point about mental and physical primes. There are a ****load of boxers who physically still have it but due to outside distractions and devastating losses can make a boxer look like ****. David Reid is the perfect example of this.Guess so...

He was in his prime, should have made this public so we could see who the ******* that voted for him was.Comment

Lol, it was me.
I have already outline why I did vote that way.
1. His mentality of boxing was all wrong at the point when he fought Jones. Having to take off a million pounds to make weight is not setting yourself up for success.
2. His only good accomplishment after losing to Jones was winning the cruiserweight championship from a mostly unproven Jirov in one of the weaker weight classes.
I mean, seriously, the prime, badass James Toney who beat Michael Nunn, and destroyed Iran Barkley worse than anyone has ever been destroyed in the ring would not have lost to Griffin, Thadzi, and all of the other useless losses that the prime James Toney would have never gotten.
Or is it merely coincidence that Toney started dropping decisions frequently, and no longer piling up marquis wins right after the Jones fight?Comment
