Nobody ever talks about it, but Larry Holmes ducked plenty of contenders while he was defending his title against some of the worst stiffs ever. During his title reign he never fought:
Pinklon Thomas
Gerrie Coetzee
Greg Page
Michael Dokes
He also didn't give well deserved rematches to Tim Witherspoon and Mike Weaver.
It needs to be said that a lot of this had to do with Don King.Comment

The list can go on pretty long.
Fighters who are high risk and low reward are obviously more likely to be avoided.
A lot of black fighters back in the first half of the 20th century were avoided: Ezzard Charles by the champs at light-heavy, Sam Langford never got a title shot, Charley Burley was avoided (even by Sugar Ray Robinson), Sugar Ray Robinson was avoided and it took awhile for him to get a title shot (he even beat the lightweight champ in a non-title bout a year within his pro debut). Holman Williams, Joe Jeanette, Lloyd Marshall, Jimmy Bivins, etc...were all avoided fighters. Jack Dempsey was quoted early in his reign as saying he'd pay "no attention to colored fighters". Apparently he had a change of heart because he did sign to fight Harry Wills, but Tex Rickard cancelled the fight. Gene Tunney drew the color line. Once he was champ, Jack Johnson avoided the black contenders because there wasn't enough money in facing them.
Greg Page was Larry Holmes's mandatory for the WBC, but Holmes was stripped for not fighting Page, choosing instead to fight Marvis Frazier for what he later said was twice the purse.
Even though Sugar Ray Leonard never fought Aaron Pryor, that's been blown out of proportion thanks to Legendary Nights. Pryor wasn't a welterweight, and as for him "challenging" Leonard at a press conference, big deal. If you're a big name and big payday like Leonard, guys are gonna call you out and want to fight you. Leonard fought Hearns, Duran twice, Benitez, and Kalule @ 154 within a 2 year period, and came out of a 3 year retirement to fight Hagler, but people seem to get the notion that Leonard was somehow scared of Pryor. If Pryor had at least done something of note at welterweight, then the "duck" would have more substance.Comment

Gerry Cooney avoided Michael Dokes and Greg Page during their time as contenders, and Dokes himself didn't fight Page, Thomas, and a couple of others.Comment
