Depends which Toney shows up, the one that lost to Montel Griffin twice, or the one that beat Iran Barkley and Michael Nunn.

I'd pick Calz by UD, he wouldn't be able to dominate Calz like he normally does and he gets abit too wild which Calzaghe would exploit, but if he got Calz into a slugging match then I'd go with him by TKO. Calzaghe has never really had a prime where everything comes together though which is a shame. Hard one to pick.

Toney would have to knock Joe out.

                    Could have happened.

James Toney's defensive ability is MASSIVELY overrated. Sure he was an expert at making himself hard to hit with his old-school body and head movement, but this wasn't a guy who never took a clean shot like Floyd Mayweather. That defensive movement made up for a relatively static and predictable style, which he further compensated for with an excellent chin, superb timing and countering and when needed, naked aggression.

Toney was at his most comfortable in fights against slow brawlers like Barkley, and Williams, he had no trouble making the telegraphed punches of fighters like this miss, and making himself look good, but when in with fast boxers it was nothing like the same story. He was behind on the cards (I think) and outboxed by Nunn when he pulled out that incredible stoppage, and Littles was making him look a bit sluggish before James once again found the KO he needed. I don't even need to mention how he looked against Roy Jones.

I'm not saying that James Toney isn't a top class fighter, but to suggest he would beat Calzaghe easily is ridiculous. Joe's speed alone gives him every chance in the world to outbox Toney, and he is also one of the few fighters out there to match Toney for both resilience and the ability to introduce naked aggression. Add Calzaghe's superior workrate and stamina and you have one of the toughest style matchups imaginable for James Toney, and a fight that if he came in at anything less than his best, Toney would almost certainly lose.
