Lummox elected to retire rather than face Vitali again, after a tough bout. He'd been talking about retirement anyway for awhile, and hadn't prepared like he should have in that fight, and in the first Rahman fight as well. Signs of lacking motivation. Such as "hard to get up in the morning in silk pajamas".
The list is long of fighters who didn't give rematches in controversial fights. And this wasn't controversial, the stoppage was correct unless you're a real sadist and wanted to see a man maybe lose an eye.
Mickey Walker never rematched Tiger Flowers. Larry Holmes never rematched Tim Witherspoon. Oscar De La Hoya never rematched Ike Quartey or Pernell Whitaker. Ray Leonard never rematched Marvin Hagler. Eusebio Pedroza never rematched Juan LaPorte or Bernard Taylor. Wilfredo Gomez didn't rematch Rocky Lockridge. Muhammad Ali didn't rematch Earnie Shavers, Jimmy Young, or fight Ken Norton a 4th time.Comment

I'm white and more than willing to say Vitali was not a great heavyweight. he was a decent championship caliber Heavyweight.I NEVER sad Vitali is an ATG, he never got to reach his full potential because of the injuries he has suffered....Vitali dominated every opponent he faced including your boy Lewis, he has never truly been beaten, his only losses were from INJURIES in fights he was dominating....It's a shame about his injuries, he could've been one of the all time greats...Vitali is definitely capable of beating any heavyweight in history with his combination of size, skill, toughness and power.
Anyway, I don't know if you're a racist or not, but its kinda disturbing that black folks always bash and hate on the Klitschko's all the time...I know its tough seeing white men dominating the heavyweight division now when you guys used to be on top, but that's just the way it is now and you better get used to it.
He has done nothing to deserve more merit than that. He could have done more, but choices and injuries prevented that from happening and you cannot rank a fighter as a great fighter based on potential.Last edited by deanrw; 05-13-2008, 10:25 AM.Comment
