Ha Ha my thoughts exactly u have the same philosophies as i do when it comes to Boxing i agree 1000%

it does'nt matter how tall u are when fighting fighters like James Toney & Floyd Mayweather because they take your reach away from u without u even realising because u become frustrated on the outside trying to hit them , u get closer & closer & u become unaware of how close u are because they are just as good in the pocket then u are obviously more suceptable to counter punchers when u are in range ,when u miss from that position a 6 inch punch can counter u

the way to have success against these type of fighters IMO is to step to your right & throw the left hooks & try to keep the fight on the outside by jabbing to the shoulder and chest , fighters like Toney & Floyd rely on making u lead to them and the closer u get the more success they have cause u are there to be countered ,IMO u have to keep your weight in a central position when u are attacking and jab to the shoulder & chest cause when u put your weight on the front foot & start reaching that is when they counter with the right hand over the top u need to centralise your weight & dont turn your shots all the way over the where they Floyd /Toney can roll the shoulder and come back with punches usually the right hand

just pitty patty pile up points keep moving to there right & crank the left hooks up when u get there a bit like what Roy did when he beat Toney perfect stratgey ,if Holyfiled had not stood infront of Toney and attacked from him from the right hand side he would not have been owned as badly as he was probably still would have
    lost but

      tony isnt mayweather..

I think mayweather could pottentially have a hard time vs a cotto,
Cotto is young has developed a great jab and versatillity also is arrogant and puts pressure and body punching, he wont break down mentally like a hatton, or fade like delahoya.

But mayweather we know can do any style, hes complete. The only way to beat him convincingly is when he gets old or doesnt train properly.

This guys has all the skill, all the experience, he trains exceptionally hard, and is able to adapt inside the ring and keep thinking, also when in trouble he can speed up the last 6 rounds, instead of winding down.

You gotta be a exceptional fighter to get some good odds vs mayweather.

Mayweather's defense is more complex than Toney's though, Toney normally would always duck down to his right to slip punches, Mayweather isn't as predictable.

If you start attacking Mayweather from the right side and start throwing left hooks at him, Mayweather can just counter with his own left hook, Toney couldn't do that because he wasn't in position, but Mayweather can.

And Mayweather's defense is deceptive, it always looks like you can get to him with a left hook, but it's not as easy as it looks because he right hand is always in position to block or parry the shot.

I agree with the rest of what you said though.

no one is saying he is Toney but he employs the same defensive shell that people find difficult to pentatrate but there are ways to combat it like not not getting to close & turning your shots all the way over like Dela Hoya did when he got hit with that left hook etc

BTW i think u are overating Floyd he got beat by J L Castillo

yeah i can see what your saying as Toney did have a tendency to bend to his right from the waist instead of from his legs & a lot off the time his head was facing the floor

i think the main thing is not to fall into the trap of letting Floyd take away your reach by getting to close

Thing with Mayweather is, his reach is longer than most of the people he is matched up against.

But I agree, you can't get lured into fighting his fight, if you do, it'll be a long night.

You need to be strong and willing to punch first and punch again when Floyd counters. Make him wary of punching.
A pure counter puncher could also beat him with enough patience and power.

                    Shane Mosley.

i'd rather he fought Mosley before fighting Cotto tbh

out of most fighters id pick Mosley woud be my least favoured the guy has showed zero ability to adapt in his biggest fights if something is not working for him he just tries harder but he does 'nt change much IMO

HE did better against Forrest in second fight with a slight adjustment but Forrest soon adjusted to what Shane was doing
