The problem with his wide temple defense is when he is inside it leaves him wide, wide open for certain punches that against Floyd will be ruthlessly exploited. The big difference between that fight and one with Floyd is that Judah can't fight on the inside very well, but, he was still able to connect on the punch that will lose Cotto a fight against Floyd which is the inside uppercut. It's one of the Mayweather's favourite punches and he is stunningly good at using it as a counter against the left hook to the body. Cotto will be tagged all night with the right hook/uppercut and straight right after throwing the left.

It's also not just the jab, Cotto lunges with everything in his arsenal. Capitalizing on it is a different story for the average, a fighter without the reflexes, or someone fighting ****** or cowardly - but it's hard to imagine Mayweather and others not tearing into this tendency like skirt steak.

Potentially, I would have to say so.
      Uhuh, spot on brother Add.

They are the perfect punches for a counter puncher to counter. If they don't land it leaves the fighter wide open, out of position and off balance for short sharp counters. Cotto would have to learn to keep his jab strong but shorten it up and use it to get inside and then throw combinations and then try to get back out of range of counters.

If he uses the jab like he did against Gomez he would get countered viciously. Cotto still has not fixed that super-wide open, high 'hands-at-the-temple' defense which would be a nightmare against Mayweather. He would be on the inside trying to get off his left constantly which leaves him open for the right elbow block and short right upper/straight or hook counter which is Mayweathers bread and butter inside set of punches.

I actually think he should work on a hard body jab for a fight with Mayweather as he would be much more likely to land and could use it to set up solid combinations. Feint with it as well as Ray Robinson and Morales did so well. Jab down to the sternum or stomach then follow it up with a jab upstairs to stop the counter or using the shoulder and upper arm to block any counter because if he uses that head jab for most of the fight he will be constantly countered with the right over the top when he misses.

To be honest i didnt even see that punch live...or the first time i seen this video...i had to rewind it a few seconds and look at it again...

i havent seen a punch that fast and short in such a long time...

yeah he looked impressive but that was alfonso gomez; not a top welterweight. it was just a tune-up fight...however i dont care who you fight your punches dont look faster mattering on your opponent.

mayweather may have more problems than he thinks if cotto uses punches that quick...

not even mayweather's reflexes may be able to get him out of the way of something that quick.

          maybe its changing from:

mayweather (the superior boxer) v. Cotto (the hard hitting brawler)

          to

mayweather (the boxer) v. Cotto (the boxer).

everyone seems to think pressure is the effective way to defeat mayweather but what would someone say to cotto boxing mayweather?

i dont think pressure is the answer against maywather...

i think its a good jab (that is used a LOT); counterpunching; effective ring movement; and effectively cutting off the ring; and not allowing mayweather to think (not exactly pressuring him; but attempt to make mayweather fight a faster fight than he likes to fight)...

not the ricky hatton; full steam ahead; wild type of fight...

oscar for the first 7 rounds (in my opinion) was fighting floyd correctly.

That uppercut by Judah was ****ing explosive though. Marg is not capable of that.

I still think it's clear as day that Cotto was recovered by then, but whatever haters will hate.
