Calzaghe was NOT in his prime between 2002 and 2004

Ive heard a lot of Calzaghe fans saying that he is past his prime, and he was not in his prime against Kessler (like Ive always thought), because he punched harder.

So hey, I decided that I should go ahead and take their advice and look up some of his fights in this time period to see how good he was, because the only ones I had seen around this time were the Mitchell and Veit fights.

Well, all I can say is that there is no way in hell this was Calzaghe's prime. Im watching him against Kabery Salem, and while he DOES hit harder, he is much slower and doesnt throw combinations half as good. He is also frequently leaving himself open to right hands, and in the 4th round he very nearly got knocked out cold by a counter right hand while he is flurrying against Salem while Salem was against the ropes. he was wide open during that flurry, and he wasnt even hitting Salem that much.

Maybe he just is having a bad night, its always possible, but from what Ive seen in general there is no way that 2002-2004 is his prime. his prime is definately around the Kessler or Lacy fight, like Ive always thought. and btw this is before the Ashira fight...cause a lot of people have said he lost his prime due to problems with his hands, and the major problems started around the Ashira fight.(according to some)

Wasn't the Salem fight the one he didn't care about though and he was going through a divorce?

In my opinion his prime was 2006, the Lacy fight. I always said the same thing. His punching power was better before then, but overall, I'd say 2006.

Calzaghe's prime was between Eubank and Mitchell (up to 2003).

Since then he's never had an early KO. He had 19 KOs in the first two rounds up to that time...

There's a difference in Calzaghe from Veit I (KO 1) and Veit II.

Veit improved a lot from the first to the second fight, you gotta take this into account.

thats what I always thought as well, that fight and after, cause that fight was sort of the first time that he had adopted his newer style. he looked fantastic in the Lacy and Kessler fights. other people have told me differently though...

was it? he seemed pretty relaxed at the press conferences leading up to this fight, although he actually got pissed off at Salem's manager and pushed him. I actually thought that would have made him more motivated, but maybe I saw wrong.

Its just strange, because Ive heard some people mention the Veit and Mger Mertichin or whatever fights specifically as examples of Calzaghe's prime...and this was dead inbetween those two fights.

Kind of surprised of the right hand that almost put Calzaghe out too. it was a big shot, no doubt, but it was mostly a short right hand. not like the loaded up on it or anything.

Hes not even past his prime now, hes only 35 and hasn't been in any wars with anyone. Believe it or not, hes actually better now then when he was in his prime because his boxing skills has picked up.

I agree with this, Veit had fought nothing but bums leading up to the first fight with Calzaghe. Veit was still nothing amazing, but more experienced of a fighter in the second fight.

the most hilarious thing was the commentary in that fight. he seemed amazed that Veit made it out of the first round, haha. I think it was that Europsort bloke. that guy is just hilarious, ahahhaa

listen to this bastard, ahahah! best commentary ever! for those who get Eurosport, could you tell me if he still does commentary for them?
