  • Pavlik is the only good opponent for Calzaghe

I've noticed a lot of people saying Calzaghe needs to fight Antonio Tarver/Chad Dawson/Glen Johnson to cement his legacy... Now that doesn't make any sense to me at all, since Dawson is just up and coming and his only good win was Johnson (and i'm not sure but from what i've read it was disputed?), whose only good win was a shot Jones jr. And then theres Tarver, who recently lost to Hopkins, who Calzaghe just beat.

Jones jr is past his prime and is due to his losses to both is less credible in a way than Tarver and Johnson, but Jones was once considered to be the best in the world, which Tarver and Johnson never were, and has looked much better in his last few fights than in those... and this fight makes more sense financially. So you can't blame him for taking this fight, because as much as a legacy is worth to a fighter, retiring with a fat bank account and living well after their career is much more important. This applies to ALL boxers, since fighting the best is also motivated by money. I also think it's cool that Roy came back to try again, like a true champion. Hats off to him if he beats Calzaghe, too.

But the only fight that would really prove Calzaghe to be great is a win against Pavlik, so that's the fight he should take after Jones jr, assuming that fight comes off. And I seriously don't see any other option. It seems like people call fights out for Calzaghe saying he needs them to prove he's the best, all the while predicting he's going to lose them, then bashing the opponent after he defeats them.

I'm not a Cal nuthugger, btw. I'm just stating the truth here. I agree his victory over Hopkins was less than impressive, although I do think he still won the fight.

Tarver and Dawson appeal because they are the current US champs at LHW. Beating those two would partially unify the division and mean Calzaghe had effectively cleared it out (in some eyes). Great add to his legacy for the man who did the same at SMW.

Roy Jones is Roy Jones. He may be old but lots of people make him favourite. Bottom line he's the biggest name Joe could beat and it if he beat him Joe would have beaten the two greatest fighters of this era at or around his weight. Another great add to the legacy.

Pavlik is the current best MW, but is hardly proven as a great. Joe already beat Kessler, who many consider a better version of Pavlik, and of all the fighters listed, most think this would be Joe's easiest fight. The main attraction of Pavlik is that he is in his prime and is seen as the best in his division, and is a bit of a US goldenboy. I don't think joe beating him would really prove much though.

I don't even know who the **** Chad Dawson is, but i've seen his record, it's not particularly impressive to me.

No, the fight would be at super middle.

Also, Joe is only 3 years younger than Roy. Both are past their prime, but a fight between these two has been on the cards for so long. It'll happen. And it'll be in the UK, I'll bet on it.

Joe needs to fight Kelly at a catchweight of 166lbs. Calzaghe normally fights at 168 anyway, so dropping 2 pounds ain't ****, it's Kelly who'd have to gain 6 to make it happen. I have a feeling Kelly would slaughter Joe, Hopkins destroyed the myth surrounding Joe's abilities. And Kelly is a straight up come-forward kind of guy with a workrate that matches Joe's. It would be a great fight and a good win for Kelly.

                  Better than Abraham anyway.

Dawson wouldn't add much to Joe's legacy, he's still on his way up and just got beaten (IMO) by Glen Johnson.

Yes, the fight would be at SMW, it'd have to be, but as far as I know Kelly wants to stay at middleweight for a while longer anyway.
