The guy fought in every division from Welterweight to Cruiserweight, winning titles in every one of them except Cruiser. how many fighters have done something like that before?
he always seems to be associated with his losses...even though in the Leonard fight, he was winning about 9 rounds to 3 until that 13th round when he got nailed. everyone knows about the Hagler fight, and Hagler was something else. even in the first fight against Barkley he was battering him, until getting caught with pretty huge shots. That rematch I have no idea, Ive never seen it. but it had to be close, it was a SD.
Seriously, look at this record.
-Knocked out Pepino Cuevas to be the WW champ
-defended the title 3 times
-lost a close fight he was way ahead in to ATG Ray Leonard
-Won the Light Middleweight Title from Wilfred Benitez, who had defended it multiple times before
-Knocked Roberto Duran out bad, the only time Duran would be legitimately stopped until he was in his 50s almost, and Duran had destroyed Davey Moore to win a Light Middleweight Title only a year before
-Lost to Marvin Hagler, while giving an incredible performance
-Defended his title again against former L Middleweight champ Mark Medal
-Decisioned former champ Doug DeWitt
-Went up to Light Heavyweight and dominately knocked out the reigning champ Dennis Andries, who would go on to win back the Light Heavyweight title twice and defend it multiple times
-Won the vacant Middleweight title from 65-3-2 Juan Domingo Roldan
-Got caught by huge punches from Iran Barkley in a fight he was beating Barkley up in
-Won a Super Middleweight Title against James Kinchen
-Beat the Sugar Ray Leonard coming off his 'win' over Marvin Hagler, dropping him twice and winning another Super Middleweight belt
-Went up to Light Heavyweight again and beat the 30-0 Virgil Hill, who had defended his title 10 times coming into this fight and would go on to rewin the title and defend it multiple times and then would go up to Cruiserweight and would win a Cruiserweight title 2 times in his late 30s and early 40s...Huge win here, imo
-Lost to Barkley again by close decision in a fight Ive never seen.
-Would have some success at Cruiserweight, but not really
...What an insanely successful career. He was almost as successful after the Hagler fight as before it, even if he wasnt nearly as dominant or overall as good.
and he went from Welterweight to Light Heavyweight and still was considered a huge puncher in the division....p4p hardest puncher of all time?
