Double Standard when it comes to "clinching"

I have been saying this **** for years, and lets just be ****ing honest here, its a race issue, plain and simple, the only reason Hopkins gets a pass on his style of fighting is becuase of his race -
Whenever a black man does something good, its because of his race I guessComment

I honestly dont see how race plays a roll in Hopkins case. Even though i have to admit, that he is one clinching mofo! LOL.Comment

you want to know, ask the Hopkins fans how they feel about his style of fighting, then ask them how they feel about Ruiz style, to me there is no difference a foul is a foul holding is holding period, but to them Hopkins does it with SkillComment

Oh i agree, but i think its a matter of "who u are a fan of" more than it is about race. Hatton clinches, and they consider it hugging/holding. Floyd clinches in the Hatton fight, and they consider it "being smart/beating hatton at his own game"Comment

SAME WITH RICKY HATTON, i think the difference is they do more punching then Ruiz does. I mean Ruiz will actually clinch the whole fight..plus Hopkins apopted that sytle later in his career as a means to survive and still win fights. He didnt do against Trinidad or Tarver that much I dont think.Comment

I agree that Hopkins does it more now. I rewatched him against Jones the other day and it was like watching a completely different fighter.SAME WITH RICKY HATTON, i think the difference is they do more punching then Ruiz does. I mean Ruiz will actually clinch the whole fight..plus Hopkins apopted that sytle later in his career as a means to survive and still win fights. He didnt do against Trinidad or Tarver that much I dont think.
I'd say that Hatton, Ruiz and Hopkins get equally slated for holding though.

The difference is that hopkins adapted that type of gameplan after he got into his 40's to compensate for his aging body and conserving energy. He was never a clincher until recently against Calzaghe and Winky. Prior to that he was not an excessive clincher. Whereas Ruiz has pretty much been like that most of his career.
Hopkins was a much, much, MUCH more exciting fighter back in the day. Or even just 5-6 years ago.
And I consider myself a bit of an expert on Hopkins fights since I've seen nearly every one of them. There is a HUGE difference from the fighter that fought Calzaghe compared to his younger days.Last edited by ИATAS; 04-28-2008, 03:06 PM.Comment
