If he fought De La Hoya, and lose. It'd set up the dumbest trilogy in a while. However, that third fight would do HUGE business. HUGE. Imagine that. The first one was huge. The second would be a HUGE surprise, and he'd be considered the UNDERDOG in a big fight for the first time in a while, depending on how he lost anyway. The same could be said for Mayweather/Hatton II if that fight unfolds.

However, if he loses to an evenly sized/matched fighter, like Cotto, and he didn't get ran over or outclassed, it'd actually help him in a certain way. People would want to see him come back and the same people would want to see him lose. It'd set up a HUGE, REASONABLE trilogy and get him millions in the process. It might also force him to fight with his heart AND mind, as apposed to just his mind. It could very well bring out THE best in him. Which is scary to think about.

I doubt it destroys his credibility to the point that he can't rebound. Wishful thinking, for those who hope such a thing happens. He'd need to be MOWED over, and lose the rematch. Then, he'd have some REAL work to do.
That was a Great post... Good Karma for ya and 200bucks for ya.

it will most likely hurt him alot, since he has been under the microscope so long, and examined so often. regardless though he is a great fighter, and to me 1 loss changes little as to what he has done in the sport, and how great he has been over the years.

Im not a fan of his particular style, as i tend to favor aggressive/come at u boxer/puncher fighters, rather than safety first/potshotters. With that said, i will acknowledge that his skills are ineed superb. Just because i dont care for his style, doesnt mean i dont know boxing as u claim.

i think with a lost that will make him better. It will force him to take the big fights to get back to his status...

If he reaches the ALI mainstream stature before he loses it won't do to much to his popularity.

Then he would also need a very good counterpart (opponent) that everyone thinks is very dangerous... and some sort of contrversy...

Then he could become a legend such as Ali.

I honestly don't think it'll hurt him in the Boxing world persay. How many undefeated fighters have we seen go out in the sunset? It's apart of boxing. You win some you lose some. I actually think he'd gain more respect from fans and critics all around just for simply taking the fight.

I was meaning mainly towards the mainstream public who didn't know who Floyd was prior to the Oscar fight. I made the same comparison to Roy because he had the same charisma and public persona until he was KO'd.

Even if someone offered Floyd $20,000,000 and told him his legacy would be even greater with one loss on it - he wouldn't take it. He likes that 0 too much. He wants to be the legend who nobody could ever defeat.
