You're the one who made a thread about Cotto's rating on HBO. I ask you when did you start caring about nielsen rating for boxing matches and why, and you tell me it's irrelevant? How is it irrelevant, it's on par with the discussion, I didn't stray from the topic.Comment

Its unfair to compare Mayweather vs. Baldomir to Cotto vs Gomez. You know DAMN well casual fans arent gonna know if a fights boring or not because they buy the HYPE. You know DAMN well casual fans dont know who is ducking or any gossip **** that goes on. Further more..
1. Floyd was put on the map by his fight with Arturo Gatti when Gatti was peaking at HIS popularity
2. Floyd's second fight after that was with Zab Judah and was a PPV fight and both were carrying momentum in the boxing world, especially Floyd after the Gatti fight
3. The Showtime card had ALOT to do with the ratings for the simple fact that Antonio Tarver was on the card. The same Antonio Tarver that had PPV fights with Bernard Hopkins AND Roy Jones Jr. in HIS recent previous fights.
Casual fans dont know what we know about the sport. They only know what promoters and fighters sell them. They bought and attended Mayweather vs. Baldomir THINKING, EXPECTING, to see some excitement and everything but that happened. Fans were booing, walking out and the commentators ****ting on Floyd during and after the fight didnt help either. So let me ask you a question, you think that Floyd's numbers would had been the same after the Baldomir fight if he would have faced someone OTHER than DLH?Comment

so you admit cotto doesn't have any causal fans..what an idiot
another bull**** lie floyd was put on the map by fighting on hbo for over 8 years. floyd vs corrales was the 2nd highest rated WCB show on HBO it pulled a 7.2 nielesen cotto now has the record for the lowest 1.1
and cotto didn't have momentum coming off his victories over zab and shane. these seems to be the one fact that is overlooked. cotto coming off 2 ppv fights only does a 1.1 on WCB. this has never happened before. you can specualte why the public did not endear themselves to cotto like they did ricky, but that is another story
none of the showtime fighters were coming off 2ppv's with big name fighters. momentum was on cotto's side and for whatever reason the public is not buying the hype that this guy is a serious threat to floyd.
you answered your own question. a few fans booing baldomir for clinching did not take away from the success of the ppv or the fact that baldomri vs floyd sold more seats then cotto vs gomez. face the fact that cotto is not a houesehold name and needs to do more to build the floyd fightComment

Cotto needs to realize that he needs to talk more to market himself even if it's not his true nature, and not go with the "I just fight and let my company chose the fights" bull**** that he says every time. Being the quiet shy guy isnt gonna get it done.
I predict that the cotto vs margarito ppv with a countdown will do less then floyd vs baldomir.Comment

bottom line is people paid to see a guy with absolutely no chance fight Mayweather whereas hardly anybody watched a similar scenario unfold with Cotto.Comment

Didn't somebody show us a couple months ago that Cotto-Mosley did less buys than Mayweather-Judah and Mayweather-Baldomir? Fairly sure I remember that. THOSE are numbers to look at for sure.Comment

They can be excused because Mosley-Cotto did like 300,000 and the "he's not a draw" is NOT an excuse to not have Mayweather fight the number 1 contender in his division over Ricky Hatton again (I'll give him a pass on De La Hoya, but he must fight Cotto after that).
Mayweather did 340,000 against Baldomir compared to De La Hoya's 900,000 against Mayorga. I could easily say that Floyd didn't deserve a shot at De La Hoya because of that.
Mayweather must fight Cotto.
edit: Please note this is nothing like Margarito-Mayweather. Margarito was unproven/unworthy competition wise (he hadn't beaten anyone minus Cintron. Not even Joshua Clottey yet) and was not the number 1 challenger. Mayweather was...against Baldomir. Mayweather also had a better bout against De La Hoya ahead of him.
Mayweather has no one other then De La Hoya again (which I don't agree with, but it can be justified somewhat). Mayweather Cotto would still do 900,000 atleast, imo.Last edited by warp1432; 04-26-2008, 11:14 PM.Comment
