hagler's chin was rock hard, but he also had more tricks in the bag than the bull did. jake was one dimensional, all he did was follow you around and try to put pressure on. his bull rushes werent that effective, and he wasnt even a good puncher. hagler could box and brawl. his fights with hearns and mugabi speak for themselves. i cant say who wins or who looses, but hagler would never get the jake treatment. marvin was a naturally right hander who fought as a southpaw, he would switch up to confuse his opponent. very difficult fighter to deal with, and on top of that a tough son of a *****.

LaMotta was known as a pretty clever boxer actually. He used his shoulders effectively to avoid shots, he rolled and slipped with punches well. Joe Louis called him "Slippery Jake".

He wasn't the boxer-puncher, master jabber than Hagler was, but LaMotta was no crude skilless guy regardless to revisionist history.

i wouldnt call him clever he was still raw in his technique. i think all that talk circulated around his defence. people used to say how he came forward and ate up all the shots thus creating reputation for his iron jaw, but in reality he was very good at slipping punches. that's really the job of a stalker. a guy like tua also was very good at slipping punches but you wouldnt call him a boxer (and tua rarely gets any credit for his defence). i guess jake was clever in a sense that his defensive abilities were deceiving but other than that, he didnt know how to make opponents come to him, use the ring, put empathis into the jab etc. he was good at slipping shots. but in the robinson fight he took every punch that robbie threw at him

I dont think any weight above 147 should count here, so in my opinion Jones, Hopkins, Hagler are out.

At 140-147 I think the following at their respective peaks would all give Robinson a good match ( I'd never say beat! )....... Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Shane Mosley, Pernell Whitaker, Vernon Forrest, Cesar Chavez, Floyd Mayweather, Roberto Duran.

Robinson was the complete package and did look devestating at welter weight, speed, power, defense, lightning combinations, rhythm! He looks unbeatable......BUT in my opinion Ray faced tougher competition at middleweight when he was past his peak. At welter I wouldn't have said his resume was dotted with fighters better than some of the good modern fighters listed above.
